Q: Installing 10.4 on a Pismo a good idea?

My iMac's in the shop;it may be a few days- a long time in Internet years. =)
I normally just use the Pismo for giving PowerPoint lectures, so I hadn't updated her in a while. I'm realizing just how many things need 10.4 minimum to run- right now ol' Bess is running 10.3.9 on a 400 MHz processor and 384 MB RAM.

Would it be cruel and unusual punishment to try to make her run 10.4? If so, what version has anyone successfully run on a Pismo?

Thanks!

Intel Core Duo 2.0 GHz iMac, PowerBook G3 400Mhz,(Pismo FW), iPhone 3G! & others..., Mac OS X (10.5.2)

I have 10.4.11 running on my 400MHz Pismo with 384MB RAM. Runs fine.

What size HD do you have? Until a few months ago, I had a 10GB HD (which was cramped for space), but I upgraded to a 40GB HD.

    Cheers, Tom

Should run just fine. I have 10.4 running on a Pismo with 512mb of ram right now and my work Pismo works great with 10.4 and a GB of memory.

    But you will be fine.

Only if you tried to do so in 256 MB or less of RAM.

When you start 10.4 up for the first time, Spotlight will take some time (once) to index your Hard Drive. There are several sets of software updates that should be applied to bring your Java up to current levels, and when you get some of those done you will be offered a new version of Safari.

You can also turn off Dashboard and free up the memory it hogs:

My sister is about to take charge of an iBook G3 500 MHz with a 10 GB HD (but with RAM maxed out to 640MB) that is running 10.4.11 - it is a little slow especially when using the USB 1.1 ports, but will be adequate for her needs.

We deleted the folder Printers from ~/Library, freeing 1.5 GB of space, and then ran Monolingual to free up a further 500 MB.

I have read that each subsequent release of OS X is supposed to run FASTER than its predecessor : if this is so, then Tiger should run even faster than Panther, assuming that you have the necessary RAM to cope. With 384 MB, you should just about get away with it, as long as you don't try anything too ambitious!
