Try using the DNS settings provided by [OpenDNS|www.opendns.com]. DNS is what is used on the internet to find where a server is really located, so if you're seeing a lot of "can't find server" errors then maybe Earthlinks DNS's are not responding quickly enough.
The OpenDNS site has instructions on what to change, so have a read through there.

I had the exact problem as Rigolinr's Mom (Earthlink dial-up/Safari 3.2 & Mail images) and spent the last two days trying to figure it out by emptying caches and resetting Safari, etc., etc., (computer savvy I'm not). Your solution iBod fixed it for me. I can't thank you enough.
