Q: Where can I get a driver for an AppleCD 600e?

9.1 has the driver for the CD600e already installed, unless you disabled it with Extensions Manager. You need Apple CD driver or Apple CD/DVD driver, Foreign File Access, High Sierra File Access, Apple Photo Access, ISO 9660 File Access, and maybe a few others active.

Can the drive (with a CD in it) be seen in Apple System Profiler and Drive Setup?

You may want to have another look at the section about SCSI devices in the 034-0267 PowerBook 2400c manual (here). Is there an external terminator connected to the AppleCD 600e?

I can't solve your wanting to play Riven problem but I can solve your Myst problem: Recently an updated version of Myst called Real Myst that is essentially a real time version of the original Myst complete with weather & wildlife became available for Macs running Mac OS X: http://tinyurl.com/a7l8z8. It even features a brand new Age called Rhyme that isn't even present in the Myst that runs under Classic.

Unfortunately, any original setup disk (floppy?) is probably not going to change much. It would contain drivers, but you seem to have them already (or you could install new ones from a system CD). There is an Apple CD-ROM extension (version 5.4) available for download (here) but it should not be needed (and I do not even know whether it is suitable in combination with Mac OS 9.1). Do check that not more than one type of CD-ROM software is installed.

I assume that there is a CD in the CD-ROM drive; the drive as such will not appear on the Desktop.

Even though a terminator is in place, one should perhaps not rule out a problem with the SCSI cabling and/or termination.

Well, (since the external CD-ROM drive is not working) at least if you had access to another Mac with a CD-ROM drive. That other Mac could then be included in some kind of intermediary arrangement.

The PowerBook 2400c can be used as an external hard drive if connected to another Mac with a SCSI port (see the manual for details).

Please note that a normal CompactFlash memory card can be used for transfers of files to a PowerBook 2400c. For this you would need an inexpensive PC Card adapter for CompactFlash (insert the adapter into one of the PC Card slots). There are also PC Card adapters for other flash memory cards (e.g., SD).

I am not sure what Mac OS X you are running on your Mac Mini - so I offer the following information for your consideration.

There is a version of Riven called Riven X. It is available from www.devklog.net. Scroll down the homepage until you get to Riven X 0.7.3 released. The download link is there. After you download the program, Option click the Riven X icon. The install options are displayed. I have the Riven DVD and the Riven X program installed the files. Now I can play Riven X without having to have the DVD in the drive.

I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.6 and the game runs great. The game is not a complete release yet but the developer is working on it.

P.S. There are other fixes that allow Myst IV - Revelation and Myst III - Exile to run on Mac OS X 10.5.6 as well. If you are interested in either of these please let me know.

I have Myst III Exile that came with the Limited Edition of Myst IV Revelation. This edition included Myst III Exile on one CD.

My new iMac is a 2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. To play the game I have to disable one of the processors. If I do not do this, the audio is out of sync with the video. The software to disable one of the processors is CHUD 4.6.1. This software is Apple Developer Software. Google CHUD 4.6.1 to find and download the software if the dual processor situation applies to you. I also had to install the patch for Myst III Exile (576 kB). You should be able to find this as well by googling Myst 3 patch.

I had to do quite a bit of searching here and there on the Internet to find this information. So, if your Mac does not have dual Intel processors you will probably have to be persistent in searching the Internet for the answer. I found many different answers, some that involved instructions for using the Mac Terminal Utility and entering code. I hesitated doing that because I did not know how to go back into Terminal and restore the original settings. I typically do not make changes to Mac OS if I can not back out of the changes I made and get back to square one.

Hi, it sounds like you might have the drivers installed already.

But I have a feeling your drive is actually not working, or the lens needs to be cleaned which is pretty typical for something of this vintage. You can buy a lens cleaner, basically a CD with a couple of brushes glued to the surface which are available at most Staples stores.

I prefer to do this myself using an old camera lens blower brush but you have to strip down the drive and be EXTREMELY gentle when cleaning the lens.
