Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

Calling Apple support and requesting to talk with a supervisor worked for me a some other people here. I would give that a try first. AppleCare supervisors have the power to grant extended warranties for this problem. Not sure anyone at an Apple Store has that power.

I called Applecare Spain and the provide me almost inmediately with a case number to bring the iMac to an AASP of my choice.

An outstanding service, considering that the iMac was not only out of the pity 1 year Apple warranty but also out of the Spanish legal 2 year warranty.

In any case, you should not have to beg or struggle for a fix of an evident flaw in origin. I hope Apple will implement a public reapir extension program soon.

How do you suggest I get past the first guy I talk to that asks me my code number and all that.

I'm afraid he'll attack me saying my phone warranty thing is up. Like the did last time...

Just tell the person you would like to talk to a supervisor. If he/she tells you there's nothing a supervisor can do be a firm and tell them to connect you to a supervisor again. I've never heard of customer service refusing to transfer a call up the chain. Just be firm and you'll do fine.

Perhaps excluding LCD is not smart yet, as it is important, I believe, what batch this LCD is from. Having first replacement LCD problem came back within a week. Having second replacement, I am typing on it problemfree now over half of a year.

Once again, my guess is at contact point of LCDs to the main unit.

OTOH, ir is pleasure to see how many success stories we have collected here. Right thing, Apple, it would be logical to finalize story in official warranty extension for this defect.

I just developed a single greenish vertical line on my 17'in iMac Core Duo. One minute it wasn't there, the next minute it was.

Does anyone know how much it costs to send it to Apple to have it fixed?

OK - THIS explains things!! I feel like I'm part of a worldwide victim's advocate group. My 17" 2007 iMac developed the first (of many, I'm now guessing) yellow vertical line yesterday. Thanks to your narratives on the issue, I'll be calling Apple Support and trying my luck with them.

This is clearly a manufacturing defect, and Apple should prominently display this problem, along with special instructions for pursuing a repair solution with them FREE OF CHARGE.

I had the same problem and decided to take my imac (Serial No. W86...) to an Apple Store Genius Bar and see what they could do about it.

I was told that there was a problem with the graphics card and that they would replace the part free of charge, even though it was out of warranty.

Now one week on a single yellow line has returned even though I was assured the problem was fixed for good.

It seems that either this was a quick fix in the hope that the new part would last it's 90 day warranty or Apple really don't a F**king clue what the **** is wrong with these Macs....

Now I have to take time out of my weekend to drive 1 hour to my closest Apple Store so it can be 'fixed' again...I wonder how many time they fix it for nothing (costing Apple £287 a time) before they decide to either give me a new Mac or my money back...

    Result!

Or at least part of one!

Phoned up Apple Support today and explained the situation (That the lines had returned after 7 days since it's last repair), they have now agreed to collect my Mac from home, saving me a lot of hassle.

I only hope they sort the problem out properly this time!!!

I have the same problem. First there was one line....and in 2 months I have 10. naturally, the lines appeared just after the 1 year warranty period. Looks like it's is systematic defect on the model.

Just to add another voice to this - same problem 18 month old imac, first one, then a second line. First one cyan, second yellow... looks like I should expect more of them.

Agree with all of you. Apple should sort this - 18 months is not an acceptable expected life of a consumer electronics product.
