Feb 19, 2009 6:19 AM in response to Specialliteby Texas Mac Man,Speciallite, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Do you have the user manual? May be something in the manual. If you don't have the manual, download it here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50128
 Cheers, Tom

Thanks -
Feb 19, 2009 7:03 AM in response to Specialliteby Grant Bennet-Alder,Is the paper jam light the only light on, and is it solid or blinking? -
Feb 19, 2009 7:06 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alderby Speciallite,When I first start the printer the green light comes on and then when I try to print something it will act like it is trying to start printing then the the paper jam light comes on solid orange, and the green light goes out.
Thanks, -
Feb 19, 2009 7:36 AM in response to Specialliteby Stuart Hazeldine,If after this happens you check the printer and no paper as moved, this would indicate that the main paper pickup roller is not working properly. After removing the paper tray, turn the printer on its side and check that the pickup roller is properly fixed on to its shaft and the black rubber tread is in good condition. If it is not, you can remove it to clean it and if this doesn't help it should be replaced. -
Feb 19, 2009 9:16 AM in response to Stuart Hazeldineby Speciallite,It looks to be in ok shape...any other ideas? -
Feb 19, 2009 1:05 PM in response to Specialliteby Stuart Hazeldine,You then need to see if it is moving when trying to pick up paper. You can do this by removing the paper tray and pushing in the tray sensors and the empty paper sensor so that the printer gives you the green light instead of the empty paper light. Now send something to it to be printed and watch if the paper pickup roller turns as it is trying to pickup paper. If it dosn't do so you may have a gear or a motor problem. -
Mar 24, 2009 10:31 PM in response to Specialliteby mmcdavid,I have a LaserWriter 16/600 PS and was experiencing much the same problem. I had tried everything including buying different paper, cleaning the rollers, etc. It wasn't until I removed the fuser and cleaned it did I discover the problem. There were a few, very small pieces of paper stuck in the fuser. I would recommend that you get some canned air and clean the fuser assembly very completely.
Also, I have discovered that if the printer says you have a jam, sometimes you have "check the back", and pull out the toner cartridge, and pull out the paper tray before it thinks that you might have cleared the jam. Good luck.
If the fuser trick doesn't work and you have experienced an accordion-like fold when printing and the printer doesn't spit out the paper all the way, you may need a fuser assembly unit replacement. They run about $40. Good Luck, again. -
May 9, 2009 3:58 PM in response to mmcdavidby Shelley Schreiber,Would this also be applicable to a LaserWriter 16-600 whose paper indicator light flashes continually even though there is paper in the tray?
My LW 16-600 will not print because of this. At first, I thought it was because my computer couldn't access it. But it is in the printer list. So now I think this is a mechanical problem.
My printer is at least 10 years old, I believe. It was a wonderful machine when it was working. Who might be able to repair it?
Thanks for your help,
Shelley -

DesktopsWhen paper out is flashing, it tends to indicate a problem that is using the LED array as an error output.
If you have a Mac that can run "Classic", run "Apple Printer Utiltiy". That will give you an extended error message.
You can also visit this site run by Laser Service in Redondo Beach:

May 11, 2009 9:41 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alderby Shelley Schreiber,Thank you so much for responding, Grant. I can run Classic on my G4 and will go to the link you suggest.
In case this give you any ideas, here is my setup:
The printer is plugged into a Farallon router, which used to be plugged directly into my G4 (this was to overcome scsi vs usb issues). I set up the printer using the LaserWriter utility via Classic on my G4 and was able to print fine.
Then I purchased a Mac Pro Intel Xeon and connected the Farallon (and thus the printer) directly to it (rather than the G4). And the G4 connects to my Mac Pro via an ethernet cable.
Since then, my Mac Pro can "see" and list the printer via the Fax & Printer preference, but the printer won't print and the yellow "paper out" light flashes.
So, in addition to wondering if my printer has a printer hardware problem, I wonder if I should be plugging the printer into the G4 instead of the Mac Pro?
I am going to try this as well and see what happens. I did have the G4 preferences set to share the printer.
Anyway, thanks again for your suggestions. I will post back the outcome.
Shelley

DesktopsIf each of your computer can access the Internet independently (whether other computers are on or off), you could plug the Ethernet cable from the farallon converter directly into your Router.
The 16/600 is Ethernet-capable by itself, it just lacks the AAUI-15 to RJ-45 twisted-pair transceiver. With a US$5 to $10 AAUI transceiver, you could skip the farallon converter and cable it to Ethernet directly. -
May 11, 2009 1:27 PM in response to Grant Bennet-Alderby Shelley Schreiber,Hello Grant,
I ran the LaserWriter Utility from my G4 and it says my printer has a temperature malfunction. I Googled that and found out that this means there is a fuser failure, for which I can order a replacement from the fixyourownprinter.com people.
"'Fixing Temperature Malfunction' really means that the Fuser [aka Fixer]-- the combination of the power module and the Fuser module -- has failed." Those are your words in another thread of the same problem!
So I am going to go to the links provided on that post, which you supplied, and order a new Fuser. Following that, if it clears up the flashing light problem and I can print from my G4, I will try plugging it directly into the Netopia router and see if I can print from my Mac Pro. If it does, I will be in Printer Heaven!
Once again, thanks so much for the clear explanation of what is going wrong with my printer. It's a great printer and I want to keep on using it.
Best regards,
Shelley
PS I'll post back the outcome. -
Aug 6, 2009 7:03 AM in response to Shelley Schreiberby Orville H,The easiest way to tell if you have a temperature malfunction is to see if the printer gets warm after being on a few minutes. The fuser assembly has a quartz bulb inside the fuser roller. If the bulb is working the fuser will give off heat. If the bulb has failed the fuser will not go above room temperature.
The bulb can be replaced separate from the fuser for those with some mechanical ability. I replaced one in our work printer about 157,000 copies ago. It still works as well as it did the day it came out of the Apple box. I picked one of these printers up off eBay a few years ago for $10 that had the same problem. After installing the $10 bulb it has performed flawlessly.
