Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

Mine is not crashing at all, pretty stable. For random crashes/reboots, most likely cause would be thermal related OR caused by malfunctioning or insufficient power supply unit (rather common in PC world). If by saying BITES you mean feeling some electric impact on touch, leak may be involved. If past warranty and brave enough, I would try to open case and check sanity of equipment within, there is some probability of incorrect state, left after repair.

I thought it would be thermal too because I'd read some old posts, I took it out of the power chord etc, etc, (usually it overheats and freaks me out) but it was pretty cool and it still wouldn't turn on. That's probably the worst way to figure out if it's thermal related though. Hahaha.
It might be power supply, sadly, I can't turn it on to do a software update.

The bites part was just to show my frustration, hahahaha.

Sorry for the late reply, just got my Mac back to day...the problem seems to be fixed for now.

Anyway in response to your question I took mine to the apple store at Blue Water shopping center, but it shouldn't matter which one you take it to as long as you make an appointment with the Genius Bar at which ever store you choose, otherwise they will probably send you away and tell you to make an appointment.

To everyone out there with the same problem, the only thing I can suggest for the moment is take your Mac to your nearest Apple Store, because the are very much aware of the problem and I was told this model (Mac 5,1 serial No. W86...) was under their Exchange and Repair Extension Program and would be fixed for nothing.

I have to admit I was lucky (even though the problem returned after a week) But don't be afraid to stand your ground and don't take any B.S.

Good Luck, and I'll let you all know if the lines return for a third time.

The fact that this has happened (I'm assuming) soon after a repair, it sounds to me like the repair team screwed up somewhere, you should send it back again and tell them to sort it out free of charge!!!

    Hay Guess What.......Lines are back!!!

Only 24 hours after it's second repair, that's gotta be some sort of record!!!

Apple it's clearly not the LCD, otherwise the problem would stay gone!!!

Wow. It does seem like something other than the LCD is too blame.

Mine is still OK after 3+ months. Keeping my fingers crossed

I too had a line issue, though it was horizontal in nature and what I found out is that it is something related to the logic board. As per many posts here, the lines started showing up here and there - a pixel in width - then progressed to may line many pixels thick after 10-20 minutes of usage.

About 2 weeks ago I was watching a DVD, the machine started to get weird video distortion then crashed - kernel panic! I trudged my way to the Apple Store and talked with a Genius, the news was disheartening: $900 to repair a machine that is 3 years old!

I, too, have had issues with vertical lines. First one started about six months ago, and I'm up to 139 at this point. I've finally gotten fed up and have contacted Apple. I'll post the response I get. In the meantime, thanks to all of you who have posted before about this. Keep up the good fight until Apple steps up and does the right thing to correct this obvious defect.

    DId you email Apple?

You might try calling Apple and talking to a supervisor. That seems to be your best chance of getting Apple to fix this problem. It worked for me and many others. Hopefully it will work for you too.

Got 1" wide white vertical line on W8 iMac. Read Forums, called Support, spoke with person that answered, transferred to Supervisor, received a Case Number, made appointment at Genius Bar with Case No. on email, dropped off iMac, got telephone call four days later, picked up iMac, looks beautiful like before.

Just what I would hope for and expect from a quality outfit full of quality people.

    Thanks to all.
