Unobody 17" Macbook Pro 9600M broken gfx card?

    Received my notebook Today and have similar problem. Maybe my is not very bad, but can see some issues when use the last two black and white backgrounds from system. Is only at the left top corner and with the 9600 card. With the 9400 I have no problem. What should do now? Bought via Internet.

    I guess what I don't understand (and this isn't meant to bash anyone here) is why people are so quick to find the problem, but so slow to diagnose it?

    What I mean is, what are we doing as consumers to troubleshoot this issue? We know that some (perhaps all) are having these issues, but no one has given any explanation as to why.

    I find it hard to believe that this is the only case of this happening in a computer, yet I have seen nothing to help bring it into perspective. Everyone keeps saying, "I hope its a firmware issue!" yet they pack up the laptops and send them back without a second thought.

    I have this same issue with my iPhone. I have had the plastic crack on 3 phones now, but I am done sending them back. I have an apt. tomorrow morning at the Mapple store and all I am doing is making them aware of the problem so I have record of it if and when they make a change.

    I guess what I am saying is, lets sit down and do as much research into this as we can before we go off half cocked. I'm not defending Mapple here just to be clear, as this shouldn't even be an issue, but I am thinking about this from the perspective of the user. If it turns out that the chip just needs a firmware upgrade then it's a lot less trouble to just wait.

    I'm doing nothing at the moment and will wait a few days, but I saw this issue already at the first date after few hours using the notebook.
    I just was a little disappointed, because we are buying a notebook that is more expensive compared to others because of apple's quality. Finding this type of problem is not very nice.

    For some reason after a software update (java, itunes, etc) and a restart, I haven't seen the problem. It makes no sense, since it have nothing to do with the graphic part of system, but....

    Today I will stay again many hours using the computer and will see if appears again.

    Have you try running a fan control program (at the highest speed) before running a heavy app?

    Why don't you just use the 9400 card in the meantime? That's what I'm doing.

    It's not a huge speed difference when working with photos anyway, is it?

    I have the same issue on my laptop. It showed up the very first night I got it! But then it seemed to go away for awhile. Unfortunately it is back now. Strangely enough, I've tried taking screen grabs of the issue using Grab and it won't show up in the pics. Just like the others who have posted on this thread - the problem seems to get worse as the machine gets warm. I can't quite figure this thing out, and I hate to replace the machine. I finally installed everything I needed and it's taken me forever to get it the way I want it. Any advice? This thing feels too widespread - too many people are having this issue. Apple should really tell us if this is something they believe they can fix with a firmware update.

    Same here. In the 'Higher performance' mode the screen is full of artifacts..

    Yes, brand new 17 inch unibody. Received it last Tuesday, opened it up, tested WoW, and noticed it right out of the box. I did not want to believe it, so I put myself in denial. After a reboot, issue went away for about a day or so, then saw it again. With my background, it is barely noticeable, but then I started seeing other shades of reds that really brought it out. I finally took it back to the Apple store, they looked at it without an appointment (since it was less than 14 days old), and they exchanged it for a new one out of the box.

    So far, so good with the replacement!

    I am having exactly the same problem as "forcefedmedia".

    It only appears with the 9600m graphic card, and it get worse when increasing its tasks.

    I have the same problem. I just got off the phone with Apple and they are going to replace my MacBook. I am a little worried that the new one will have the same problem. Has anyone who had one replaced had the same issue on their new unit?
