OK this is what is happening. Its a bit complicated

My eMac was working fine. I restarted it and the following situations occur.

1. It starts but the screen is black. sometimes it starts and the chime occurs and but the screen stays black and the eMac remains on.

2. It starts with no chime just 4 loud beeps and the screen is black and eMac stays on.

3 It starts and the white Apple screen is displayed along with the spinning dash wheel. the wheel spins for a while and then stops and the eMac shuts down.

Sometimes when the emac stars and there screen is black the little light on the front panel will blink four time and then remain lit.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

It is a 1Ghz eMac. 2004, the model with the 1.1 USB bus ATI graphics.

    Hello again Dominick,

    1. Don't go poking around inside that eMac unless you know EXACTLY what you are doing in there!

    2. Have you changed any RAM chips there?

    3. Has that emac been subjected to a jolt or sudden movement recently? Ergo - Before this issue manifested itself?

    Regards.

Have you run Apple Hardware Test? It's on one of the CDs that originally shipped with your eMac. Put it in, and reboot while holding down D. It won't fix anything, but it will tell you if a trip to the repair shop is needed.

Kiraly. Does that disk come with any new OSX packages? Like Tiger?

No it doesn't. It only comes on discs that ship with new Macs. Because every Mac has different hardware, it would be impossible for Apple to include a "universal" Apple Hardware Test with retail versions of OS X.

Here is a very old Apple page where you can download a disk image of Apple Hardware Test for the eMac, then burn it to a disc and then boot from it. But I don't know if it supports all eMacs or not.

Boot your eMac while holding down T. Then hook it up to another Mac with a firewire cable. It should mount on that Mac's desktop as an external firewire hard drive. You can then grab your files off of it.
