If you have a MobileMe account that you are accessing with your iPhone, and you are syncing calendar events over the air with your MM account on your iPhone, the Birthdays calendar is not available when doing so.
I access my MM account on my iPhone and I sync contact info and calendar events over the air. I exported my Birthdays calendar in iCal on my Mac and imported the calendar events into a new calendar with iCal named B-Days. This calendar is available on my iPhone. the export-import workaround did it! Finally I've got the birthday-calender on my iPhone!
