Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

Anyone from Australia had any luck getting this issue fixed? I am currently up to 15 lines and haven't had much luck with support.

Well, folks, so far, so good. Just called the Apple technical support line. Explained to the tech guy about the vertical lines and that, according to this thread, this appeared to be a universal problem with the W86 iMacs. After a few minutes on hold while he talked to a "Product Specialist", he returned with a case number for repair. Smooth, easy, no hassle whatsoever. And BTW, there was no mention or comment about the fact that the iMac was out of warranty.

I suggest everyone who hasn't tried this (and those who might have tried before) give this a shot. Seems like the word must be getting around and things are loosening up at our beloved Apple.

    Good luck.

Has anyone gotten the lines again? I had my computer fixed not even like a month I don't think and there is a line that is coming back but it is on and off.

I am so fed up. Should I try calling apple support again?

They cover repair work for 90 days so have them fix it again.

yes its great to see success stories but the simple fact is there are various screen related issues and its happening on a wide scale. apple should have addressed this but instead they have allowed it to get to the point of class actions being filed.

Its about time we use people power to make them admit to these defects in the logic/graphics board.
Why should we have to pay the repair cost.

It's bad design/cooling!!!!!! That have caused all these failures not their loyal customer base!

(Mine are horizontal lines & crashes!) SMC Fan control still keeps my imacs heart pumping! And its sensitivity to heat under control).

But instead of being silent, it sounds like a 747 taking off!!

Thanks to all who have fought this fight for the rest of us. The vertical lines appeared last month - W86 Serial. I called Apple Support today and they immediately offered to repair the problem - said I was under a conditional warranty. I have an appointment at the Apple Store on Friday.

I appreciate all the posts and the trouble everyone else went through to get Apple to acknowledge the defect.

Well, folks, I just got the iMac back from repair, and all seems well. Again, this machine was out of warranty, but Apple authorized the fix anyway. So far, so good.

Again, I encourage those who may have been stonewalled in the past to give it another go. Apple has restored my faith by taking care of this issue.

    Good luck, all!

thats great that they finally did something right but the fact is the stonewalling shouldnt be happening in the first place nor should the issues that so many are having. I wouldnt go so far as restoring faith.

On March 1st, 09. I received my first line of death on my iMac.
After eleven business day at the Apple store Genus bar. My iMac and I have been happily reunited.
They replaced both the LCD Display and Logic Board.
Thank god for AppleCare extended warranty, It would have cost me $1,430.25 US.
