Okay. I've been using LT for 6 years with no issues, so I'm not sure what is happening here. I try to launch LiveType either from the dock or the Applications folder and the little LT icon hops up and down (like usual) but then the computer freezes and I get a spinning beach ball. It unfreezes itself a minute later, without LiveType ever having opened. I've shut down and restarted, to no avail. I need this for last step of a project due on Tuesday, and hope to work over weekend, so if anyone has any advice, it is much appreciated.

PS - I've not loaded any new software anytime recently, so don't think that is the issue.

Thanks-
Dave

Have you tried repairing permissions? It really might be that simple.
Post the version number of LiveType and FCP/FCE that you are using.

    Hi Nick-
I did repair permissions. Still no-go on Live Type. I'm using FCP 6.0.1. Can't open LiveType, so to confirm version number, I navigated to it and finder, ctrl-click on icon and selected "get info" then computer froze again for a good 5 minutes. Finally, it unfroze with info open, and I noticed that I am running 2.1.3 for LiveType. Really strange stuff here. Also, when I open Motion, I also freeze for a minute or two, but Motion does ultimately open.

PS - I've also tried to open LiveType under other users on this computer, in case it was a User preferences issue, but this seems to happen across the board. Thanks.

More info. I've also noticed that if I cmd-tab back across Finder and still had the "Info" pane open for Live Type, that my computer freezes upon landing on that "Info" pane. Even without being open, anything associated to LT is freezing me temporarily...

If it freezes when you click Get Info, that sounds to me like an indication of a system-wide problem.

Have you done anything recently (software updates, etc) that could have caused this? Can you see any error messages in the Console (in /Applications/Utilities)?

    Hello-
Thanks for the response. I've just logged in for the day and tried to open LiveType. This log is relatively short because of that. Note that there seems to be a couple of errors even before I tried to launch Live Type - but I don't know what any of this means. After the line "Debugger () was called!" is where I tried to launch LiveType. It seems there is some kind of Library issue? Again, pretty ignorant on this stuff, so anyone who can read a log and guide me on possible fixes, it is much appreciated. Here is the log:

You're missing am important framework. This framework is located inside the application bundle so you can either:

    1. Copy the LiveType executable from another computer that has the same version.
    2. Patch it to the latest version (if it isn't already)
    3. Reinstall it.

Thank you Jon. I'm going to try option 3 later today (beautiful Saturday here in New England). I'll report back results.

Quick question. I upgraded to current version of FC Studio in fall of last year. I presume that the LiveType associated disc on this is all I need (along with old version serial numbers, etc.) and that I don't need to reinstall using my old original discs from 2003, right?

    Thanks

You don't need to do a complete reinstall. Try this:
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcs_remover.htm

Just select Application and Receipts under LiveType and deselect everything else. Run the remover and then put the DVD in and reinstall. Everything should be grayed out except LiveType and it should not ask you for your serial number since the serial file wasn't deleted.

Then update LiveType in line with the other FCS applications on your system.

    Hi Jon-
Thanks again for the advice. I did as instructed and downloaded that app, selected only Application and Receipts, removed it and rebooted (which it instructed me to do after removal). Then I put the DVD in for FCS install and LiveType was the only thing not grayed out. I went through process of installing it with no issue, then, when I got to the install place where it said something about "installation scripts for Live Type" (or something like that), my computer got hung up completely. After about 5 minutes I had to hold power button in to restart. Tried something again, and again had the same results. Any advice on next steps?

Hmmm... well in that case, select all the options under LiveType. I was hoping you wouldn't have to do that.

This is not working for me. There is something really funky going on with Live Type. I removed the other components and go to delete out of Trash and I get hung up even doing that. Something is corrupt here.

Now, even FCP is messed up. If I click the icon in the dock, I get the semi-transparent question mark over it, and I did NOT remove FCP when I removed Live Type via that app.

Is there any way for me to "revert" to a previous configuration of my computer? I've never had to do something that extreme before, but I'd like to try that. Alternatively, I think I need to wipe out FCS and reinstall completely or something. Thoughts?

If your system is hanging when you try to empty the trash, that is a serious problem and probably nothing to do with LiveType. I would advise running a disk verify in Disk Utility and using Onyx to check the SMART status of the drive (this is designed to indicate if the drive is about to fail but it is not perfect).
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html

Mac OS X doesn't have a System Restore function like Windows - the closest thing is Time Machine in Leopard but you have to specifically set it up with an external disk.

Okay. Here is what I got when doing "Verify Disk." What can I do? Will a clean install repair this disk. Any advice is appreciated.

    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid node structure
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.

You can't repair your startup disk while you are running OS X. You will need to insert the OS X DVD and restart the computer while holding down the C key. When the menu appears, select Disk Utility.
