I'm suffering from the same problem.

24" iMac that didn't have a sleep issue problem until 10.5.6. Now most of the time it will not wake from sleep. Have not tested the 6hr limit yet, though it usually wakes from sleep if I do so after only an hour or two.

I have a logitech wireless keyboard and mouse, but had them since before the 10.5.6 update and they didn't cause any problems then.

I usually solve the problem by holding down the power key until I hear the hd (or a fan) spin down. Wait 10 seconds, then startup as normal. Sometimes the mouse and keyboard won't work, but I gather that is a different issue.

OK, strangeness continues...now for no reason sleep started working correctly again. I didn't upgrade the OS, still using 10.5.6. Hmmmm...

It seems I've been getting the same problem as well.

The 20" iMac running 10.5.6 wouldn't wake up one morning and then started doing it multiple times, almost every morning after being asleep for some hours. When pressing a button to wake it up the screen stayed black but I could hear some low noises and buzzing, though less noise than usually when the iMac is on. Pressing the power button for 5-10s and restarting was the only solution.

I first reset the PRAM (didn't work), then reset the SMC (worked!). After the SMC reset it was running fine again for about two or three weeks. Now it seems that the problem returned...

I'll fix the permissions (didn't try that yet) and reset the SMC again to hopefully fix it again (though probably only for a while). This is the first time the iMac has given this problem and it may be due to the 10.5.6 update or perhaps one of the latest firmware updates, although it's hard to tell.

No warranty left on it and didn't take AppleCare, so hopefully it's not a hardware issue. Perhaps reinstalling OSX is a solution.

Sounds a lot like my issue, same symptoms. I have a suspicion that the 10.5.6 update is the culprit. I really should re-attach the old keyboard and reset the PRAM and see if that helps. Let us know how it goes, if you find anything that works.

I, too, have been having the won't-wake-from-sleep problem with my 24" iMac, and it seemed like the problem appeared at the same time as the 10.5.6 update. I've tried Combo Updates, Disk Repair, Repair Permissions, Hardware Test, etc.

Another problem arrived at the same time, and I wonder if others here have the same experience. Generally (75% of the time?), the first start-up of the day fails. Sometimes the white-screen/Apple-logo appears and after a while, the spinning wheel stops spinning. Sometimes I get to the login window and the cursor freezes, and sometimes the login process will being but lock up. Oftentimes the machine name gets upnumbered: Icebox becomes Icebox(1), then (2), and is now at (148), though sometimes it was upnumbered in giant leaps.

I was assuming that these problems were interrelated, but no one mentioned startup issues in on this thread.

Actually Ian, I am having the same issue. More than half the time, my iMac halts during the startup and I have to hold down the power button to cycle the power off and then restart. It usually works the second time. Usually it freezes on the light blue screen, with now "loading circle" showing.

I think the problem may be related, but it didn't start at the same time the sleep issues did, rather it took a few weeks to rear its head.

You can add me to the list of white start up screens. I noticed a few weeks ago that my iMac (I have the 20" Aluminum) would freeze after being inactive for a while. Sometimes it would freeze on screen saver, but usually it would freeze immediately upon waking up in the morning, and I'd have to cold restart. Recently I have been getting white screen (no Apple) and have had to reset SMC. That fixed it. NOW, I get white screen, no Apple, and eventually, the ?-folder telling me the system can not find the OS. I can not boot from the CD either.

At first I suspected my hard drive was failing as I got a lot of errors and had to repair the disk in single user mode, but I thought I would attempt a clean re installation of the OS before taking it into the shop. I re installed last night, and then updated, and I am hosed this morning. Can't boot from the CD, can't boot into the hardware test.

Yep, add me to the list of 24" iMac (white 2.15ghz) users having the problem.

Yes, tried reset the pram, and disk permissions, I've wired Apple mouse and keyboard.

No startup 'cold' or restart problems, just once it goes to sleep, it's in a coma. I have to disconnect the keyboard, network and mains leave it for a few minutes and then reconnect and start again.

OK, resetting SMC didn't work anymore the second time. Just left it switched on at night instead of putting it to sleep. One long weekend I wasn't going to use it, so simply turned it off for about 3 days. And ever since... no more problems. It cured itself for some reason.

What I did notice was that it actually wasn't a 'waking up from sleep' problem, but a 'going to sleep' problem. The low noise I heard when it wouldn't wake up could actually already be heard when it went to sleep. Now when it does go to sleep you can hear it shut down completely so there's no more noise, but when it didn't you could hear the low noise instead of the complete shutdown.

So (for me at least) it seems like a problem with getting into sleep mode instead of waking up from it.

Sorry I can't offer a good solution, but you can try to keep it turned off for a day or two and see whether that magically cures it . I did however run the diagnostics tool that came with AppleCare (used the AppleCare cd from another mac though) and it said there were problems with the directory structure. It didn't fix anything, but it did indicate some volume / directory structure issues which may or may not have something to do with it...

    I wrote:

Same problem here (24" iMac 2.4Ghz). With 10.5.6 it started (on exactly the same day). Was waiting for 10.5.7. Upgraded via Combo update. No change! I think it might even have gotten worse. I now have to pull the power chord to get it going again!

Has anyone had their iMac in for servicing and got it back fixed? What was the component at fault?

I will be re-installing Leopard today and then directly apply the 10.5.7 update (without going to 10.5.6). See if that helps (has anyone done that yet or seen a re-install fix the issue?). Just waiting for the backups to finish...

    Cheers Oliver

One additional question to all. It looks like Logitech seems to be in the solution mix too. HAs anyone got these issues that has never used a Logitech keyboard or mouse on his/her system?

I also have iMac sleeping issue for months and I don't know how to solve it.
My problem is that when I check "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver" (System Preferences > Security) my iMac often goes to sleep when try to exit from screen saver by moving mouse or pressing a key button. And in place of login/password window I see rainbow mouse pointer and my iMac turns to sleep in a second.
It also happens when I try to wake my Mac from sleep mode - I press a key, but again rainbow mouse pointer and iMac goes back to sleep...
    Does anyone have such problem?
I do not remember exactly, but it started to happen after some of 10.5.* update,
and I can tell for sure that I never ever had that on Tiger.

Same here. I had this problem since last week when I turned off iMac from Mac OS X startup volume (I usually works on BootCamp Windows XP). In past 9 days, every morning I cannot boot up my iMac. It stopped at white screen with grey apple icon and spinning circle, sometimes it hangs on pure white screen. I have to reset PRAM every time, then re-boot several times to make iMac bootable, and then reboot to BootCamp. It takes about 2 hours.

Because of this problem, I'm trying to update my backup for BootCamp and Mac OS X partitions. But I have to make some noice to prevent iMac fall into sleep, since in the past several days, I noticed iMac cannot wake up from sleep after I left it for few hours, or cannot fall into sleep. I did notice once that it can pop up the login dialog from screen saving mode, and after I logged in, I noticed another dialog complains the running Disk Utility blocked the log out process - seems the sleep mode or the screen saving mode somehow requires logging out of my account while the Disk Utility was doing write-zero task on my backup drive.

It is really a pain. I do not have this problem before updated to 10.5.6. Now I upgraded to 10.5.8 and the problem still not fixed.

hmm... I wonder if this is what my issue is? I thought it was a HDD failing. The machine won't wake from sleeping, I get the waiting cursor. I'll power cycle it and it's hit or miss whether I get booted up or just get the folder with the ? in it. And this just started happening after the last update!

I already ordered a new HDD...
