Can anybody help me?

In the network control panel there is a setting that allows several location profiles, so you can alter your network connections, depending upon where you are. When I take my MacBook Pro away from home I tend to switch to an 'offline' profile with all the ports switched off (so I don't waste the battery on the Airport card). I am finding that when I get home and switch back to my regular profile (with the Airport on) my computer freezes. Completely freezes, as in the mouse cursor wont move and no keys work and I have to hold the power button to reset. Mostly this happens when I use the shortcut on the Apple menu to switch locations, it seems to be better when using the control panel.

Any ideas?

MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

Instead of creating a location "offline" why not just turn off your Airport?

I could do that, and may well end up having to do so. Ideally, having found a problem, I'd like to solve the problem rather than work around it. Thanks for your advice anyway.

The advantage of a profile with no open network connections is that the computer instantly gives up trying to establish an internet connection. Otherwise, opening some programs makes them freeze while they try to connect and you have to wait for that process to time out before you can start using the program (offline - of course). I don't know if all the connection types work this way though.

I have the same problem with a MacBook. I had a friend with the problem on his MBP and he ended up re-installing a clean OS which fixed the problem. I have yet to do so. Oz

I am having the same problem, I clean installed my whole OS when I bought my MBP as usual when I buy a Mac. Don't want to do that again unless I really have to.

Does anyone have a fix besides reloading the whole OS, as that is just way too time consuming?

I was hoping 10.5.6 would fix it, alas no. I really cant be bothered to reinstall (nor should I have to!). I've actually resorted to doing what Sig suggested. Turning off the Airport from the menu bar is as easy as switch locations from the Apple menu. I'm hoping it will be as energy efficient as well (I don't suppose leaving the ethernet port open uses power and I leave Bluetooth on anyway, for my mouse).

I guess I will do the same.... I luv Macs but when there is a problem it seems to be the weirdest most annoying little thing....

    Happy Holidays.

Have similar problem. I carry my MBP to several customers. When I get there, I just switch location. 9 out of 10 times go well but then that one time: total freeze. I do need to switch locations as the environment does differ quite a lot.

With previous OS-X releases it was worse. But still, it's not solved.

I'd prefer Apple to focus more on extremely solid basic functionality and performance instead of eyecandy. This shouldn't be too much a hassle due to the unix heritage of OS-X?

BTW. This MBP doesn't and never has run Parallels or other VMs. It's just plain OS-X, installed with an archive & install over 10.4. Don't want to reinstall OS-X - that's one of the reasons why I bought a Mac in the first place: low COO.

Not really answered, but as my laptop died the question is kind of moot!
