I agree. There are many screenshot utilities out there: InstantShot! is another (free) and xScope (shareware.) Preview can also be used for this purpose.

It will be interesting to see which utilities slow down and which don't. Some probably will slow down since a lot of utilities, especially the free ones, hook into the same command line screen shot utility that OS X and Grab do.

I also have this same issue with both processors.

Also xScope, to my knowledge, does not do screenshots - it is a measurement tool for developers.
(I own it and have never used it to take screenshots, can't find an option to do so)

also a little known feature about the built in screenshot utility is that
    *if you push: cmdshift4*
    *and then: spacebar*
you can click on any window or "layer" and *just take a picture of that layer*, including drop shadows and transparency. (try on quick look, icons, app windows, and some overlay elements in leapord)

Resetting the PRAM isn't going to help you with this issue. Google "inquirer macbook pro" and learn why everyone is having such freezing issues +(kind of funny to use that term considering that many of them are also overheating)+. Many computers using the Nvidia video chip +(including many non-Apple computers)+ are having a lot of issues because Nvidia used bad "bump material". The chips are not bad, it is the way that they were attached to the motherboard. Contact your local Apple store for an exchange. Just make sure the replacement MBP was recently manufactured. I would call them ahead of time just to be sure

Having this problem as well. Bummer to hear that I might need to exchange my Mac to get this fixed. Any other things to try before going to that fairly drastic step?

I had the same issue, repairing permission fixed it.

I'm a developer (web/Flash) and I can assure you that the latest xScope can take screenshots (through use of the 'Frames' tool) as well as measurements.

Ah... Thats where it is... I see that it does, Thank You.

Can I ask how using this for ScreenShots fits in your workflow?
I am also a web developer, I use xScope for measuring to get my css right, and for knowing page size in different browsers, and sometimes alignment, never for screen grabs... yet.

Ha! Now I only said that it was there - not that I actually used it!
For screen capture I just use the usual key combos/Preview and occasionally the very handy ScreenGrab Firefox add-on for web pages.

I've only ever used xScope for the same reasons you do - measuring and alignment in web development; occasionally Flash/DTP and graphic design work too. The screengrab feature feels a little gimmicky, that's not to say I wont eventually find some use for it.

If you manage to streamline your workflow with it, be sure and let me know!

I am experiencing the same issue as well. I will be calling Apple Care and see what's their response.

So far has anyone got an official reply from Apple Care for solving the issue?

I just tested this, repaired permissions, and still had the same issue very consistently. Under the 9400 card, I can screen grab (I've been using full screen, CMD + SHIFT + 3) without any issues either plugged in or battery power. If I switch to the 9600 card running from battery, screen grabs cause the computer to become unresponsive and the mouse to move in a choppy way, similar to experiences I've had where the system hogs the CPU. However, I can't see any of my menu meters changing because nothing seems to get updated. Once I plug in again, everything I had done with my mouse gets interpreted -- windows flying all over the place, etc. -- and the screen capture gets dumped to the Desktop. My CPU meter shows a slight bump in CPU usage from when I plugged in, but that's all.

Called AppleCare again and they informed that they ARE NOT aware of any NVdia 9600 issue at all, this is really disappointing.

As expected, they requested me to run the hardware test for at least 12 hours and see if there is any reported errors. From there, further troubleshooting shall proceed.

Got feedback from AppleCare and they acknowledged the issue. A firmware update is being developed and will be released once it is ready.

I'll keep everyone posted once the firmware is available.
