I've been thinking of picking up a G3 iBook and just using Mac OS 9 since I just want the computer for using it around the house. But I was wondering if I use iCab or Mozilla for OS 9 can I view YouTube Videos ? I looked around and on Puremac is version of Flashplayer for OS 9. So does anyone still use Mac OS 9 and can they use youtube.

I regularly boot into OS9. Internetting works fine, but a lot of websites either donät load or lacks some functions (usually ads, and forms).

I use Netscape 7, with Flash 7 (which is the latest I can use with OS9 and Netscape). Youtube works fine, but the pages may occasionally looka oddly arranged. Some video sites (e.g. megavideo) doesn't work at all with Flash 7.

I don't know how long Youtube will work with Flash 7. They're likely to upgrade al their videos or web page functions soon to require higher flashes.

I can also do internet banking (transferring money, paying bills), but some functions don't work properly. PayPal does not work at all with my OS9 setup.

I should also add, that some modems don't work with OS9 at all (due to some compability issues). You need to check with your ISP if your modem allows networking with OS9.

You may want to consider an iBook or PowerBook with a G4 for wider support of Video playback, if that is an important use.

    Hi!

I just visited youtube with WamCom the other day and a lot of videos played fine.
    Some don't, movies don't. Install [WaMCom|http://wamcom.org> and then[Netscape 7.02|http://mac.oldapps.com/netscape.php] for Mac OS 9.
The Netscape install will [update|http://resale.headgap.com/bobsmactips.html] (tip
on this page) some of wamcom's components and make it work more stable. I've not uploaded videos under Mac OS 9 though. I don't know if that works.

I use Mozilla 1.3.1 with OS 9.2.2 on my G4 400MHz AGP tower. YouTube videos play, however, due to the slow 400 MHz processor speed & slow 100MHz bus speed, the video slightly lags the audio.

What model iBook are you considering?

If you want to view YouTube videos, I suggest using http://m.youtube.com/ for videos.
The regular YouTube on OS 9 will either be slow or won't even load.

hey, I see many people have given you many answers. I'm a fellow lover of 9.1! But the internet forcing u to change computer and OS version I have my Wallstreet powerbook for getting my mails into Outlook and it works fine. I also try to use the net and with the internet explorer 5.1.4 since it was the last version and I have OS9.2.2 many website works but it depends what they use on the site, myspace and else use too much flash player and so it gets frustrating. So I have my Ibook graphite clamshell 466 mhz with OS 10.3.9 and it's impossible to watch Utube videos cos the speed isn't strong enough. It's just a question of processor speed but the flash player beeing also updated a lot it gets harder with time.
    keep it Mac

    I have a 466 procesor in my G4.

When I'm booted into Tiger, I use Flash 10 (the latest) with both FireFox and Safari. Sometimes youtube videos play awful. They're chunky and jerky, and the images lag behind the audio. This only hapens with some videos, so it could be that some videos are coded differently than others. (Flash 10 with SeaMonkey seems to work a little bit better. At least the jerkiness and lag seems less severe.)

However, when I then boot into OS9, and use Netscape 7 with Flash 7, and watch those same videos, I experience no problems at all. No video/audio lag, no jerkiness. Instead, all videos play smoothly. Possibly this is because the earlier Flash version (v.7) simply ignores some of the incompatible information associated with youtube's FLV files. Hence Flash 7 needs to process less data in order to play them.

I have no idea if this really is so. I'm just trying to rationalise the fact that Flash 7 with OS9 is better than Flash 10 with Tiger.

Look at this post about watching YouTube videos using OS 9 on an older Mac.
