Acoluzzi and Martin M, thanks for your help. I opened a case with Apple and included this thread. At least there's a possible work around. Still no ideas on the root cause, but that's Apple's problem, now.

    Hi,

Im a Day Trader and I use a Java based Charting Platform. As you can imagine this has had a devastating effect for me. I can not load my charts. I have attempted the work around but the charting platform just crashes.

I too have lost the Apps/Java folder and all that remains is my Java Preffs.

Can anyone help with something else I can try ?

    Cheers,

    Jnr.

I'm not the most proficient with OS X but when I get to the open with screen, I don't have the option of typing in a route - I have to go through the motions. But when I tried doing this, there wasn't the option you typed - in fact, it didn't even have the first part - "system" let alone the rest.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

Scott, if you get any response from Apple please ask them why double clicking on the Java Web Start application no longer brings up the Java Cache Viewer. This is another maddening side effect of this upgrade. Thank you!

    Rami86,

In Finder, click on the .jnlp file you need to operate on. Under the "File" menu, select "Get Info" (File-->Get Info). In the resulting pop-up, there's a section called "Open With", click on the drop-down and select "Other...". A new window will appear that looks very much like Finder. Navigate to your hard drive, select System, select Library, select CoreServices, and then select Java Web Start.app. Once it's been selected, I would also recommend clicking the "Change All" button on the Info window.

    Good luck!

(Anyone from Apple perusing this discussion?)

What charting software are you using? I had the problem with Interactive Brokers' TWS software. The workaround was to not use the web launch version, but the downloaded version. There are now tighter security restrictions on what a web-launched Java program is allowed to do in terms of disk access and whatnot, but those restrictions don't apply to desktop applications.

It's too bad that there isn't a way to lift some of those restrictions on a case by case basis.

I just wanted to confirm about 50% of users in my group have this problem and it can be fixed either by just opening /System/Library/CoreServices in the finder, and then logging out and back in. Or by bringing up the "get info" dialog on a .jnlp file and selecting open with /System/Library/CoreServices/Java Web Start.app
However that only fixes it for the currently logged in user. So in a multiuser environment it would have to be done by everyone. We also found in one case that re-running the software update fixed the problem in one case.

acoluzzi, you can get to the cache viewer by running:
    /Applications/Utilities/Java Preferences
and then selecting the network tab and clicking the "view cache files..." button.

Mr. Organ, please do not hijack this thread. Your issue is completely unrelated to that of the OP and you should start a new thread with your new, unrelated issue.
We are talking here about a jnlp file opening in textedit, which has nothing to do with either Mail or Safari.
You should also be posting in the Mail and/or Safari forums, not here.
    Thank you.

Hi I'm using IG markets - Real Time Charts which are supplied through a 3rd party called IT-Charts.

The work around does not work to get these charts running. They crash as soon as they attempt to load.

I have another iMac that has not yet been updated. Can I take the JAVA files off that and replace them with my updated ones? If this works I will post a download link for all to do the same.

    Anyone with ideas on this?

    Hi,

I suppose you're using Pro Real Time, for charts like i do.
I had the same exact problem as everyone, and was using them through wmware and xp untill now when i found this thread.
I've tried opening the jnlp file going to /system/core services etc... and for the moment it's working pretty well.
I'll update tomorrow if it doesen't work anymore correctly.

This worked, thanks! My .jnlp files were opening with MacVim.
