Me, too. I had a security code enabled on my 3 week old 3G iPhone. I got stuck during the upgrade process when iTunes told me to unlock the iPhone, but there was no way to do so. So I had to do a forced shutdown and a full restore. That sequence apparently leaves WiFi and Bluetooth unusable. Apple clearly never tested this scenario, and should issue a warning to disable locking before upgrading.

So does that mean this will eventually be solved? or should i get it replaced at the apple store?

    thanks

I also had the security passcode feature on my iphone. after the phone restarted on the original upgrade, itunes kept telling me I had to unlock the handset, yet the handset was displaying the "connect to itunes" graphic (i.e., emergency calls only). As I couldn't unlock the phone, and I couldn't connect to itunes because of the lock, I had to do a full restore. Could it be that this caused the problem? In any event, my replacement 3G on 3.0 is working nicely.

Hello everyone. This will be my last update unless I hear anything else from Apple directly. Although I am tempted to make this thread "solved" many of you may not like it so I will keep it open so you can continue to discuss.

Ultimately after speaking to lots of different people including many levels at Apple both retail and Corporate as well as an Admin Member of the Apple-Care team, it is my understanding that this issue will remain somewhat unresolved in terms of getting an actual fix to the phone. Apple is clearly aware of this issue now and unfortunately they need to diagnose these phones to figure out exactly what the problem is. I was asked to send in my phone as well as a few other members of this thread so the engineers could take a look at and try to figure it out.

In the meantime, currently without wasting anymore of your time trying to fix your phones, I would visit your apple store and have them swap out your phone for a replacement one. Apple is a very good company and anyone that is out of warrenty should show them this thread and explain your situation and I am pretty sure they will get you a replacement phone. So before anyone freaks out, it is worth an effort to try and get your phone replaced because no matter if you just bought the phone or your phone is a year old, there is NO solution currently other than getting a replacement.

You are more than welcome to try and do all the steps to fix your phone that people suggested but I can tell you now, if you are having the "grayed out" problem, there really is NO FIX software wise for it currently.

I have been in contact with multiple people at Apple and I have been trying to update you guys as to what I've heard. If I hear anything else or anyone has other question feel free and I will try to respond with what I've heard.

Also overseas people who don't have easy access to stores and what not, I would just call apple directly or whoever you would call for repair/replacement issues because again, there is nothing a single genius employee has done differently from the things you have tried to fix your phones. So don't think that you are losing out being far away from a store because they honestly try the same stuff that was suggested throughout this forum and nothing fixes the problem.

Hope that helps some of the confusion and this problem stinks, but luckily enough people have made Apple take notice and maybe there will be a fix in the future, but if you need that phone now, call and try to get a new one.

I had the security lock code enabled as well. That is starting to sound like the common link. Anyone have the lock code enabled and had a successful upgrade?

Wi-Fi isn't working for me. Bluetooth works, but is intermittent. Everything worked fine before the upgrade to v3.0 SW.

Another problem I've noticed -- when typing in a name in the "TO" for emails, it doesn't bring up my address book. I have to cancel my message and then write it again for the address book to work properly.

I don't have security codes enabled and still are having problems with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

    Wi-Fi is working now!

I turned Airplane Mode ON and then Off. Wi-Fi started working after turning Airplane Mode Off. I'll have to go down to the car to check out Bluetooth.

I'm still having the problems with my address book. When I type in a "TO" person in an email, it doesn't bring up my address book. I have to cancel the email and type it again and it brings up the address book fine.

I didn't have security codes enabled on my 1 day old 3G and have no wifi/bt after the 3.0 upgrade. It worked fine for the day it was 2.2.1.

I had an appointment for tomorrow, but decided to wait and see if there's a solution in the next week or so. I may just end up returning my 3G to get a 3G S, especially if I would have to settle for a refurb 3G as a replacement.

It definitely seems that the security code being active is the problem in the upgrade process. This then forces the full restore and that is where the iPhone experiences it's grey WiFi & Bluetooth. This is not a recoverable situation. I am really surprised that this type of an error was missed during the testing of OS 3.0 pre release.

I have subsequently found out that the local cell company in South Africa (Vodacom) is the sole distributor of iPhones here and they are the only people who will fix / replace the phone. I sent mine in today and really hope to have a new phone from them soon. I have had the phone for less than 1 month too!

Does anyone know if Apple will send out notification to their distributors across the globe about the problem and that the iPhones need to be replaced? If not, I think I could be in the dwang with a busted iPhone.

    Let's see what happens?

Bluetooth still isn't working properly. The phone will connect to my car for the first call, but then will not connect for the second call.

Everything (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, "TO" in email) was working fine before the 3.0 upgrade.

Same here - had the passcode enabled. After the restart, iTunes could not connect to the iPhone and instructed me to enter the passcode to unlock the phone so it could connect, and I could not unlock it because it was in the middle of the upgrade.

    Update

Apple swapped out my 6 day old iphone and updated it in the store. All is good and I'm happy again. Just for everyones info I did NOT have the security look on.

The store Genius said he never saw anything like it before. I assume he will see a lot more soon.

    *_Another Possible Cause*:_

Of course, I am having the same issue, or I wouldn't be here. Luckily, I am within the 30 day window, so I will be exchanging my phone for a new 3G-S. It's too bad they ran out while I was in line today at the Apple Store. But I did talk to them about our problem.

**One of the employees said that if you load the new OS 3.0 through iTunes on a Windows-based PC without disabling the firewall, it won't install properly.** This may not be the culprit for everyone, but this was certainly true in my case. I guess I should have waited until I got home from work. Anyway, I just thought I would share my findings.

Unfortunately, this doesn't help find a solution. I think they're going to have to come out with a fix that involves downgrading back to 2.2, and then trying the install again. I can't imagine that replacing all of these phones is improving their bottom line, but I'm very impressed that they are doing it. Good luck!

No problem with wifi and bluetooth pairs ok, but doesn't connect to my laptop (or work laptop either for that matter). After talking with support they said that this particular issue is due to ATT not activating tethering as yet. I don't have a bluetooth headset so have no way to check if it works with that device.
