Q: iTunes Freezes when ipod is connected

When I connect my ipod to my computer my iTunes freezes up. I just recently restored my ipod so I lost all of my songs and now I can't reload them onto my ipod. My ipod continutally says "Do Not Disconnect" but my iTunes is frozen. Any thoughts? I've reset my ipod and I also restarted the computer. If I wait for a long time my iTunes says it found a corrupt ipod and it needs restored, even though I have done that a few times. It's frustrating so any help would be appreciated.

yeah, i noticed my classic 80GB not playing some songs and suspected it was messing up (after awhile with 8,000 songs it does this.) i hooked it up to the macbook and instantly iTuens froze. this has happened before when the iPod stopped playing songs and i went to restore it. so i took it do disk mode, same thing. NOW, when i disconnected it it said device removed AND would i like to restore. it was hanging. ok, so i thought i have to get it to recognize while its still connected. so, i hooked it up, had it freeze, then umplugged and reconnected it real quick and hit "restore" and it recognized. my connector is old but sometimes you have to get past that "hang/freeze" point by doing this. yeah, i have had 8 versions of the iPod and some are glitchy but this stays in my car so about once a year or so this happens. try it and see. once it freezes, disconnect halfway then connect it and see what you get.

right now i am on the step of reinstalling the software (1.1.2) on the ipod. after that i throw the songs back on and everything is kosher.

even macs have wierd things you have to get around to make them work correctly....LOL.

So I did the Format thing, after trying everything else. It was formatting and when it got to the end it said, "cannot complete format" or something. Now my ipod keeps attempting to restart over and over again (screen is black and apple logo is slightly visible). It just keeps turning off, turning on, and going to the apple logo over and over. It is also making a clicking noise. <Edited by: Host>

Thanks to all who have posted suggestions here, and commiserations to all those who, like me, have struggled with this problem for so long. I have found a solution that works for me, and I hope someone else finds it useful.

My setup: an HP laptop running Windows 2003 Server (for most purposes this is just like XP), a trusty 2004 20GB clickwheel iPod with firmware 3.1.1 (the battery's shot, but it works great in the car), and iTunes 8.0. My keyboard, mouse, iPod and external disk with all my music connect through a powered USB hub.

The problem: a few weeks ago (and I can't pinpoint what caused it) my PC started locking up about 20-30 seconds after docking the iPod in the cradle. Removing the iPod allowed the computer to resume working after a couple of minutes, but unfortunately rendered it impossible to get more than about 10 songs onto the iPod.

What I tried: after much googling and reading of angry forum posts, I tried unsuccessfully all of the following.
    - Downgrade iTunes to 7.x - no good
    - Upgrade iTunes to 8.1 - no good (won't install on my OS)
    - Downgrade iPod firmware - no good
    - Tell iTunes not to load when iPod is docked - no good
    - Reset iPod via iTunes - no good
    - Disconnect other disks from USB hub - no good
    - Delete contents of iPod via Windows Explorer - no good
    - Uninstalling the device driver - no good
    - Format the iPod via Windows Explorer - no good

What has worked (so far): put the iPod into disk mode (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363). Format the disk in FAT32 using Windows Explorer. Allow iTunes to reinitialise the iPod. So far this has worked trouble-free for about a day, and has allowed me to copy several albums onto my iPod without a glitch so far. Fingers crossed...

I just bought a brand new 120GB iPod classic. I've had it for about a week or two and I lost most of my library since my old iPod died, so I've been importing like crazy. I plugged it in yesterday to my Macbook and iTunes froze.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes and restarted my iPod various times. My iPod is formatted to a Mac. A lot of these threads talk about Windows, so I'm wondering if anyone has had the problem on a Mac and knows what to do. Right now I've got a brand new iPod and no way to put new music on it. I'm frustrated! HELP?

OK, I tried a bunch of these solutions, also with no luck. However, while I had the iPod in Disk Mode, I tried "sneaking" the connector in and out as someone suggested earlier, and Windows popped up a "disk corrupt" window, and asked me if I wanted windows to check the disk and fix any errors. Normally, I wouldn't let a Microsoft app near an Apple product, but at this point I figured what the ****? I checked both options; 'try to recover' and 'try to fix', and it worked!

I fired up iTunes, it recognized the iPod, and now all is well. I just have to see if it still works when I take the NANO out of disk mode...

not sure if you guys are still having this issue, but after googling it for hours, i finally found a solution. Note this is for my iphone, but i think it'll help for ipods too...

Just delete any PODCASTS that you have on your iphone/ipod. then try again. Worked like a charm for me!

iTunes froze 5 times in a row while trying to sync my iphone this morning. (It does this every day.) Deleted podcasts as suggested above and it worked like a charm! Synced perfectly.

There was no use in resetting it because it is brand new, I tried everything and nothing worked. So I just wasted $169. I posted this on many forums and guess what no help then I bought a zune and it works perfectly! AND I HAVE A MAC!!!!!!!

Thank you Stanner. Deleting podcasts from my ipod solved the problem. Many hours were spent trying to resolve this - No thanks to Apple!

I have an iPod Classic and whenever I try syncing it, iTunes'll copy a few songs and then freeze. I restored my iPod, deleted all podcasts I have, and restarted my computer. Nothing.

Every time iTunes has frozen, I close it and the iPod resets itself then it's fine. Except I only have three albums on my it.

Has anyone else found a solution to this?
