when you receive a new text message, does it sound weird. almost like it's too loud or the speaker is blown. i've had the original and 3g iphone and none of them sounded this way.

Yes, I'm getting that too, but all other sounds are ok. I just think that default Tri-Tone ringtone is a bit loud . Nothing to worry about, and the speaker is fine there.

I have had that problem, I resolved it by shutting the phone down and doing a fresh start up.

Yes happens to mine and my brothers. Seems like a hardware problem to me.

This is an important topic. I am having the same issue. Using the default sms alert sound, it sounds like the speaker is blown. But when my phone rings, or when I put someone on speaker, it sounds fine. So I know it is not a blown speaker. This has to be software related: the tone does not play nice with the speaker: the decibels are way too high.

I am sure a software update will correct it, among a few other little software bugs I have noticed with OS 3.0. But overall, it is just so much faster and better than my 1st gen iPhone, I am not looking back.

I know the speaker is louder on the 3GS. I wonder if they just cranked the volume or it is a new sound unit...or sound file...

Same problem here. I wondered if it was just me. It doesn't help that twitter exists b/c i get tens of these alerts a day and it is getting very annoying.
