By the way I'm comparing battery life with my 2 year old iphone that has been used extensively.

i'm adding my vote here too.

i've read extensively through the forums so far, & clicked out all the links.
the common response is to disable Push.
that has a marginal to decent response, but even so, it STILL has reduced battery life.

for me, i agree with the previous poster - previously, my battery from a full charge in the morning would be down to 30-60% by midnight when i got home with normal usage. this morning, after the new 3.0 OS update, i dropped to 20% in about one hour with one phone call.

any other suggestions? i notice no techs here either, but hopefully there at least reading. keep these threads alive then.

also, anyone have a good reference to downgrade to OS 2.2.1 for now?
there SHOULD be a legitimate way to do this, but its probably one of apple's irritating quirks to not do so.
the trick of restore to before the upgrade did not revert back.
found this guy's video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L06N0_QA6R0 , but you have to have the older version of itunes.

    cheers.

I have the same problem too.
I think it is outrageous situation. Users wait a lot of time to receive Copy&Paste feature and now they should pay for it by battery life.
    Apple is disgraced for me.

I' m also getting problem after I upgrade my iPhone to 3.0 firmware last few days ago and I noticed that my phone is getting hot even not in use. The battery dies quickly after charge only last for 3hrs. Can anybody help me with this problem.

ziggy - everyone on the other posts advice seems to be the same. read through for some of the more thorough answers. basically,
1st) reset your iPhone (on your phone, go to settings>general>reset>reset all settings).
2nd) then restore the iPhone thru iTunes. pray.
3rd) after alls done, reboot your phone (push menu & power at the same til the little apple shows again).
in addition, turn off the Push Mail function and hopefully it'll work somewhat normal. pray more. wait for apple to pull itself together and release 3.1. pray that works.

otherwise, what i ended up doing was going to Genius Bar, tell em the Battery Is Hot, they don't like hearing that, & should swap you for a Brand New (probably refurbished) iPhone.
    good luck.

I too want to voice my concerns in this thread.

I have a iPhone 3G 16GB that has on all the time -:
    - MS Exchange PUSH
    - 2 other email accounts fetch every hour
    - 3G enabled
    - WiFi enabled
    - Bluetooth enabled
    - 50%/AUTO screen brightness when in use

on the 2.2 software my phone was lasting around 1.5 days with moderate usage.

Now on the 3.0 software, I keep coming to my phone only to find it OFF! It lasts barely half a day! How rubbish!

I am not willing to start turning everything off because I am reliant on these things being on, and my phone coped perfectly well with 2.2. It's like I am giving in to Apple's incompetence.

Apple need to create a fix and fast, or a remedy like telling everyone to do a complete restore and start again.

Also with regards to all PUSH notifications, be it 3.0 apps or PUSH email, why doesn't Apple introduce this technique as found on Windows Mobile Devices:
    - There is a setting to tell your phone when to receive push notifications
    - Like ON and OFF peak
    - E.g. ON peak - Mon - Fri - 9am - 5pm
    - OFF Peak - all other times
    - This is user customisable.

This would surely improve the battery life a bit, and be really easy to implement?

Yes this is ridiculous. Apple has to know it is a problem by know. They should at least come out and acknowledge it and let us know they are working on it. I don't want to turn off all the push notifications. That is what I was waiting for. Please Apple step up to the plate and talk about the battery life. I have used Apple products for close to 10 years now, but I am really disappointed in this update and worried about when Jobs leaves again. (I am not sure if it is a coincidence this crappy update happened on his leave)

Hi Guys. I just to add my vote in here also. I usually use the Incase Power Slider external battery case and ever since upgrading to 3.0 the external battery doesn't last a day. Running on the internal battery overnight takes me down to about 30% battery life left when I wake up. This was a none-issue with the earlier 2.x firmware.

    My settings are:

Location services - off (which should also disable find my iphone)
5 email accounts (one exchange activesync) - push disabled, fetch 15 minutes
    bluetooth on
    wifi on

other than battery life, which is a major concern, 3.0 has been a solid upgrade

    Cheers,
    Robert

Hi all, just thought I'd chime in here...

I have an 8GB 3G with 3.0 installed. No battery, wifi, bluetooth, speed, or any other issues at all with the 3.0 update. I have push set to auto for MobileMe (mail, contacts, calenders, bookmarks), an hourly fetch for GMail, location services on, etc. It's been roughly 36 hours since my phone was plugged in, and I still have about a 1/4 charge left, give or take.

However, a friend was having SERIOUS issues with his 8GB 3G after the update. I had him to a reset all settings on the phone to wipe it, then do a full restore and 3.0 update with iTunes, and problems disappeared. He was suffering from extremely short battery life and baffling wifi issues. Doing a full factory reset and then a full restore fixed everything, and he's now very happy with his iPhone and the 3.0 update.

Just wanted to drop a note that maybe all the re-booting and turning off of push/fetch schedules may not be a real solution, more of just a patch. Really, I know it's a time consuming pain in the ***, but try a full reset and restore, you may be pleased with the results.

Battery life since updating to 3.0 is horrible. I can't go a full day without charging. I have wifi=on, 3g=on, edge=on, bluetooth=off, push=off, fetch=hourly, and my usage is just like with my 2.2. I can actually watch it drop as I am in mail or safari. It's crazy how fast it drops.

BUT, turn on airplane mode and viola! Battery stays where it's at and only drops just a little bit even when playing games and such. So I have a feeling it is the data and 3g. Something just isnt right with the new OS. I have restored 3 times with no luck and each time I set up as a new iphone and DID NOT use a back up.

The only thing I havent tried yet is Resetting the iPhones settings in the settings app and then a full restore. Some say that has helped but I really don't think so. Apple needs a fix to this and fast!

It's at the point where all of us 3G users have to just complain on a daily basis. I have gone as much as not using the push service, kept my wifi and bluetooth on all the time. I hardly use it and maybe used it about an hour in total time and i already see is is down about 60 to 70%. Most of everything is off, until i have to use them. Last charge was about 7am. Airplane off, wifi on, nitification on, Auto brightnessPush is manually, all others is as needed. Im thinking the new iPhone has a better battery than the previous ones. I also noticed that the my phone is slow, as if it is working on things, but yet, i use things as needed. Im gonna keep complaining and wait to see if i get an answer from Apple Corporate, before i start shaking trees! Keep making comments on this and i will see if it works with mines. But I think it's safe to say, we have to turn off EVERYTHING, to keep a charge.

Hate to break it to u, but i did that before i installed 3.0, after i installed it and the only thing i got, was a sluggish iPhone! Oh, i also took it to the iPhone store and they told me it was fine! Sounds like a Microsoft response to Vista! Thank comment did not come from Apple, that is my personal comment!

How do you "turn push notifications off"???.. I'd like to try this.

I have turned off email push... my 3G that used to last 1.5 -2 on a charge is down to hours now... This MUST be addressed.. 3.0 software if a very good productivity upgrade, but if it kills the battery, what's the point?? Apple, are you listening at all???
