You don't need a utility or script.

Simply go to System Preferences-->Sound--->Output, and click "mute".

You could also turn the volume down to zero.

That should be all you need to do.

    Tom thanks for reply
but in my lab, my students know how to mute / unmute sound from keyboard and system preferences

ahhh you didn't mention the students. I'm a teacher myself, so I sympathise. Just asking them not to do it won't work

OK here's another suggestion (though I've never needed to try this myself):

Go to the account students use to log in to the Mac, select "Parental Controls". I think that gives you various options.

Yes it will help but few of my students have admin rights and I want to disable sound for all users (Admin. managed etc)

    Hi mahender negi;

If you have allowed a student admin privileges then you have probably shot yourself in the foot. Once you give them the rights all bets are off.

You could withdraw admin rights from all students unless they sign a declaration that they will not mess with the system preferences. That way, only authorised people would be able to admin the system and might have their authorisation withdrawn if they abuse it.

Or maybe there really is some add-on that will turn the audio off, for yourself only. I don't know of one but maybe somebody else does.

There should be a script to disable or mute sound in MAC OSX
    I want to use that

Whatever you do to disable the sound, your students with admin access can undo.

First off, may I ask why students have admin rights in the first place?

If they have admin, you can't do anything. Whatever you do to the system they can undo, as they have unlimited rights (and if they know what they are doing, can escalate to root). Until you give them standard accounts.

The one thing you can try, while reversible, is getting rid of the Kernel Extensions for audio. There are instructions here. This will essentially disable the on-board audio all together. (I said it's reversible, but I doubt many students will have any idea how to fix the "problem" of no audio. This is also a set fix. To change it back, you need to put the kext files back and reboot.*

*I would try this on one machine first and test.

You're best fix would be to use managed accounts however.

It doesn't matter. They have admin... they can undo anything.

    HI All
    I removed following files

    - AppleOnboardAudio.kext
    - AppleUSBAudio.kext
    - AudioDeviceTreeUpdater.kext
    - IOAudioFamily.kext
    - VirtualAudioDriver.kext

    Still sound is not disabled

I have all these related to audio:
    Apple02Audio.kext
    AppleFWAudio.kext
    AppleOnboardAudio.kext
    AppleUSBAudio.kext
    AudioDeviceTreeUpdater.kext
    AudioIPCDriver.kext
    IOAudioFamily.kext
    SM56KUSBAudioFamily.kext
    VirtualAudioDriver.kext

If that doesn't do it, put them back and try another method. I'm not sure what other audio kernel extensions there are (or as to why that didn't work). You can try rebuilding the kextcache if you want.

You can seek out and destroy all of those related files if you want, but as long as your students have admin accounts, they will be able to put them back.

Step one is to take admin accounts away from your students. Until you do that nothing else is going to work.
