The Mac Mini is rather limited in terms of adding stuff....

Perhaps the least painful approach might be to get a USB 2.0 to IDE/SATA Adapter. This little device has plugs that you can hook up the hard drive from you 5300 to and then plug that into the USB port on your Mini.

Granted you'd have to be ok with taking apart your 5300 to get to the hard drive.

Thanks, Niteshooter. I looked just now online at several such USB 2.0 to SATA + IDE (2.5 / 3.5 / 5.25") Cable Adapters, and found one with power supply, power cable, and driver CD, for $13, at Geeks.com This is like the set up you described?

About removing the HD, can I find online instructions for this? I don't need the 5300 anymore, just it has some old picture files I want to access. So if I break something accidentally no big deal.

Hi that sounds like the device I'm suggesting. It looks like a cube with places on the sides to plug in your hard drive.

Re take apart. It is pretty straight forward as long as you have a torx screwdriver to take out the screws.

Basically take out the three on the bottom then flip over and take off the keyboard.

Once the keyboard is off you slide back the trackpad which is clipped on in front and lift it off.

Now you will see the caddy holding the hard drive. It is held on with 3 screws across the front, take these off and the hard drive can be removed. It is held in with 4 torx screws. All the screws take the same size driver which should be a torx 8 but I will double check.

Once the drive is out just unplug it from the cable, I usually put a sharp blade between the plug and drive and gently work the connector off. Pulling it can break it or bend the pins on the drive.

I have some instructions here, http://www.kevinomura.com/powerbooks/powerbook5300/index.html

Btw there are folks like me who collect older PowerBooks so try not to damage her! Especially a CE as these were the top of the line 5300.

    Thanks Kevin,
I checked your website and can follow how to take 5300 apart and get to the hd. Thanks, Mckey

Ok good luck! Btw I just realized I said 4 screws holding in the hard drive caddy, it should be 3.
