My Imac 17" Intel Core @ Duo had 3 lines when I decided to call Apple Support. I explained the situation ansd mentioned that I researched the problem in the web and came across numerous complaints of people having the same situation.
He asked how many lines, when did the first one appeared and told me to wait in line while he consulted with the technician. Came back and gave me a case number and a list of various authorized dealers in my country (Puerto Rico), and told me to take the Imac to the one I prefered to get it repaired free of charge. That was a week ago and I have my Imac back and fixed. Free!

    Try calling Apple!

I have the lines, the pixels, the freezing...

Some of you guys are saying they are repairing the computers... First of all this isn't a screen issue, the problem is with the Logic board/GPU - they must have not been built to spec.

Second, even if they do replace the board, this problem will just happen again. If you listen to many of the people who had their computers fixed, it just happens again a few months later.

Can't be an LCD issue - it would not cause freezing. The problem is in the Logic Board.

I didn't experienced the vertical lines - yet - . Taking mine in tomorrow, to make a story short: iMac froze time and again. It seems to be the hard drive - I am praying is just that & not the logic board.

But, for those with LCD problems, please read this:

I hope we all can solve our iMac problems.

Until last week, I had paid absolutely no attention to the issue of 2006 iMacs blessed with the W860 serial numbers and the vertical line problem. My first vertical line bloomed about 6 days ago. I am horrified as to how widespread the problem is and how little Apple seems to care. Realising that repair would cost an arm and a leg, I bought a lovely little HP w1907v 19" monitor from a Currys store. It was instantly recognised by my 17" iMac, has the same 1440 x 900 resolution with 2 inches more screen to look at and the only downside is the built-in speakers are a bit lame. Oh yes, I had to buy a Mini-DVI to VGA Cable Connect Adapter as well. Rather than pay Apple £15, I bought one from eBay for £8.

The line appeared on mine today after quitting a game. A tastefull yellow one.

Im pretty peeved off because I was planning on selling the imac to upgrade to a Macbook pro, now it will have lost a crap load of re-sell value.

Will the "its a known problem" argument at the apple store,if that dosent work I think ill just tear it apart and sell the parts. Do you get good prices for parts on ebay?

    Robin,

Same problem and same start of serial number. Will contact my Apple store tomorrow to see what kind of support I get (out of warranty).

I talked to apple support about the problem of vertical lines and informed them that I was already aware that this problem was prevalent in W860 series. They gave me an exemption code and replaced the display without any charges. Its been more than a month and the display is working fine now.
Made me an Apple fan all over again.

Took mine to the Apple Store in Towson, MD today. Genius told me it would run me about $500 to have the LCD screen replaced. Helpful guy, even recommended some third parties who would fix it for cheaper... but I refuse to pay money to fix a product that Apple knew would go bad, conveniently after most warranties expire. I am encouraging people to boycott Apple (including iTunes) until this problem is solved and the powers-that-be grow up and start treating loyal customers like customers. I am also considering going to court. It would cost me money, but it would be worth it if it would get something done for the THOUSANDS of iMac owners who are currently being screwed over.

Have you called Apple support and asked to talk to a supervisor about this problem? That seems to be the best way to get Apple to fix this problem.

    Greetings all!
I just got off the phone with Apple support (800)275-2273. Using the term "Repair Extension Program", Carolyn got me fixed up for a warranty repair at my local authorized reseller(Database Systems in Springfield, Missouri). My imac was purchased in February '06 with a W86 serial#. My first line came shortly after the 1 year warranty had expired, and I did not have Applecare.
I appreciate all the encouragement in this forum. My hat's off to lenn5 for your positive influence on some disgruntled campers, including me.

a thin blue vertical line appeared out of no where on my computer 2 days ago, after reading this thread i just called Apple Support and they happily agreed to repair out of service....top class service
If you have the same problem, just make the call and say that you have read these threads....and they should help as they said it is a known problem....

I would like to also encourage anyone else who's having this problem to call Apple. I am out of warranty, and my inch-wide vertical stripe has been around for a year. I called, mentioned the forums and that other people were having their same problem resolved. The technician had me restart the computer, and then transferred me to a product specialist who issued a repair and made me an appointment at my local Apple Store. So, if you're having this problem, please give it another shot. I was convinced this was a lost cause, and I am happy to say that Apple has definitely made my day!
