I have changed the settings on itunes to not sync my contacts with my computer.

On my iPhone, I have "Contacts on my iPhone" and my ".Me" contacts.

Why do I show two sets of contacts? How can I make it just one-I'm tired of duplicates.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

iPhone 3GS, iPhone OS 3.0

Are you using the MobileMe account from Apple?

Is so it's an easy fix. Sounds like you might have loaded the contacts through a sync on your computer but also loaded them through the MobileMe sync.

Go to contacts, select all from your Mobile Me account, then you wont see double no more. If you select "All Contacts" you will see double. Hope this helps.

I'm sure that's what I did. I just don't know how to get the one to disappear. I've changed the settings on iTunes, so it won't sync anymore through there, just through MM.

Geno, thanks, but I'm trying to get the one list of contacts to disappear entirely. Even after I've chosen one of the lists of contacts instead of all, when I go to send an email or a message, it's still pulling multiples.

this is how I removed my duplicates

    On the iPhone
    1 delete MobileMe account
2 then set it up again
3 turn on MobileMe syncing for calendars and contacts
4 select "merge" when iPhone asks the question

This happened to me when I enabled "push" for contacts. Turned it off, and duplicates vanished. It seems .me "Pushes" duplicates that were already on the phone.

but if you turn off "push" you are losing the "push" feature. I think what's causing duplicate is there is one set of data is on the phone and one on MobileMe. Merging them seems to make more sense than disabling a feature that you already paid for.

How do I get the Mobile Me deleted from my iPhone per your instructions above?

I agree. That is exactly what I did. I "merged" the data on MobileMe, my computer, and my iPhone, and everything is cool. As soon as I enable "push" on the phone, so that new entries on my computer or MoibleMe will be "pushed" to the phone, ALL of the contacts on MobileMe are immediately pushed and I get duplicates of all of them.

Mush easier to disable this "feature" and simply wait to sync when physically attached to the computer...

Hi Guys, I logged on to find just this exact same answer! I have that problem on my new 3GS. So no more push and it will solve the problem right ? Maybe apple can fix that in the Future with 3.01

I think I understand the problem you are having.
You are still syncing from 2 places, your computer and mobileme. It's up to you which method is easier but one of them needs to be disabled. E.g. After I merged the contacts and calendars, I do not have it sync on my computer - only sync on mobileme. So on my itunes, after I connect the iphone, under "info" tab, I unchecked "sync address book" and "sync ical". Essentially only mobileme will do the syncing (with push on). I only have 1 contact and 1 calendar set now. This works better for me as I have more than one computer and I need them all sync via mobileme as well.

To answer a question on how to "delete mobileme" so you can set it up again
    go to settings/general/mail,contact,calendar
select your mobileme account - you can just select the big red "delete account"
    or
under "contacts" and "calendars" turn to "off"

either way you'll be asked what to do
    select "delete from my iphone"
then either turn them back "on" or recreate the mobileme account (if you deleted the account instead of turning it off)

just make sure that next time you connect your iphone to your computer you have contact and calendar sync checked off in itunes.

Yes I think this is a glitch and should be fixed in the next patch.

    Thanks, Tootster!

I had already changed the settings in the iTunes not to grab the contacts and calendars, but I didn't know the trick about turning the Mobile Me "off" and "on." Thank you for explaining how that works-it did ask me to merge or not with the existing contacts and calendars.

Did you select merge? that way only 1 copy will be kept on the iphone.
Did that solve the double contact lists issue for you? I know there are different ways of removing duplicate list so it's really up to you which list you want to keep. I just find it more convenient to sync via mobileme push, but whichever way you choose, your contact will be properly synced anyway.

I did select merge. I completely agree-I pay for MobileMe, I may as well use it! Thanks again for your help.
