Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

Lenn5 and others are right, you have to call, and if they don't want to help, call again, and again...

I bought my iMac towards the end of 2006 and had my first line in the spring of 2008, a couple months out of warranty. Since then the lines have grown to almost entirely cover half of the screen. Just last week a 2 inch strip of the lines began to turn completely white. I made the call a couple months ago but had to hang up because I wasn't in front of my computer and the Apple guy wanted me to "try a few things". I waited a while and just made another call a couple days ago. Talked to a guy that transfered me to a Product Specialist. He asked me a couple question about the lines, then told me he was going to set up an appointment to get my screen fixed at no charge. This product specialist seemed very aware of the problem as he didn't ask too many questions before he said they would fix it out of warranty. I would just keep calling and asking for a product specialist till you get one that is willing to do something for you.

I just dropped it off at the Apple store today, and the list of parts ordered to be replaced were the LCD screen, cable, and the logic board. All for $0. Can't wait to have it back...sans lines.

So keep calling, and if they still won't help call the their public relations department to complain.

My vertical pink line showed on the 18th of july 2009. I thought this was a graphic card but have since learned from these posts it is a COMMON problem. I also think apple should step up to the plate on this problem and fix all these defective screens.
I own 5 other macs g5,macbook,macbook pro, 2 ibook g4s and no other problems with these.
come on apple lets admit there is a problem here and do the right thing!

I called Apple Support after reading the replies in this forum concerning vertical lines on my IMAC display. Seven lines as of today and the computer is out of warranty. The first person I talked to at apple said he never heard of this problem. I asked to talk to a supervisor, the supervisor said that because the MAC was out of warrant he could not authorize a free repair.
It appears Apple is inconsistent in how they are handling this problem.

Well. I just got off the phone with Apple and they won't fix my 17" Intel Imac serial # W86**U2N. The support technician actually suggested (very nicely) that I get an external monitor. It seems I might have to learn to live with a yellow vertical line on my LCD. Help!

I waited 6 months after my vertical 1-inch white block appeared (when the local Apple Store wanted $550 to replace the LCD) to see if Apple would admit to "being aware of the problem." I called today, got a Product Specialist, and was given a case number for a free repair in minutes..!
So Apple now admits there is a problem, that it goes beyond the 2006 W-serial# units, and that they will "soon" make a public announcement on a Repair Extension Program.

Meanwhile call Apple Support (800) 275-2273, explain your problem, ask for a Product Specialist. Your local Apple Genius Bar doesn't have the authority (yet) to give you a free repair.

Thanks to all on this thread who have made a difference!

Add me to the list of "stripers" - I noticed my first line about two weeks ago, now the population has tripled. I'll be contacting Mac later today and I'll be very curious to see what kind of treatment I get.

    I'm on a 17" Intel iMac purchased January 2007.

I purchased my imac dec 2008. I was using it one day, took a break only to return and find a grey screen. After trying to call for help I was told I would need to take it in to be checked...ofcourse it was already out of warranty. After taking it into a local apple store I was told that the display LCD was going to have to be repaired......$915.00 dollars later, a 30 day warranty, I walked out with the computer that I purchased because it had such a good reputation. After getting it home I researched on line and found lots of people with display problems....sad, kinda seems like if this was a car it would be on the lemon list. Now all I need is the 2nd IMAC I purchased on the same day for my daughter to break....

I got my first vertical line tonight

My serial number begins with SW87 (purchased 10/07) so I wonder how I will get on tomorrow when I ring Apple care. Has anyone else experienced this on a machine with SW87 serial number?

Just got my i-mac back after it was repaired.

It was out of warranty by a year when the dreaded lines started, but was repaired free - no argument, no discussion. They were very apologetic.

I took it to my local Apple store (in the UK) and they repaired it at the store.

Took 10 days (would have been quicker but some staff at the store were away with flu!).

When I picked it up they gave me a receipt and guarantee for the fix - so I could see it would have cost £280 to repair if I had paid.

If you are having this problem just phone Apple or take it in to your store. They have now acknowledged the problem and are repairing free, so no need to panic.

If you live close to an Apple store my advice is to book a Genius Bar appointment and take it in - less hassle than phoning.

I rang Apple Care Australia today and they have agreed to fix it free of charge.

EXCELLENT service. This has restored my confidence in Apple.

Hey, fellow Mac users - just checked in today after some months having passed, and was slightly surprised to see topic still to be at the very top. However, looks like it is much easier nowadays to get free fix, which is decent turn for Apple, of course!

FYI: my iMac still works fine after second attempt of repair, which I wish to you all to end with, too.

As to biting, that this should not be happening at all: well, it's real world, and there are cases, when manufacturing problems uncover only after a good while, which greatly complicates possibilities to isolate them earlier. It's no secret, that Apple works hard to lead in design solutions, thus I would make some allowances for this sake (and our benefits) alone, if not for occasional manufacturing issues. Which is of utmost importance, that company knows its stand, facing odds - and most of us can confirm, it does right thing.

For those, in minority: you have to insist bit more and further, as to get to more competent Apple representation, which should be out there, as it is evident. Good luck!
