Q: Repairing permissions after 10.5.8 update extreme oops maybe???

Ok I understand that there is still the issue of Repairing permissions regarding hard code links no big deal. Apple still has not fixed this in this update.

The problem that I have at the moment is understanding why the dbase is not updated properly it appears.

After applying the update to two separate machines both intel based and running Repair permissions through Disk Utility which is what I always do after any os update, there were some very strange oddities that pertains to core files and even after reboots and rechecking seferal times there is no change.

Someone at Apple messed up I think and did not update the permissions dbase during or after the update. I also used the Combo updater versus the smaller regular update as I always do to to avoid some intermittent occasional install problems some tend to see when using the smaller updaters.

Anyone else seeing this and how big of an issue is it to have it show for core files permissiona "should be ?--------- ," ??

I think this is what happens:
- For files not installed yet, their permissions (and owner) are taken from nonexisting files during the update process and stored in the package Receipts (Base system). Obviously, the combo drive may affect more files.
- Installing the update twice +without repairing permissions between+ re-reads permissions from the files which at that point are available and the receipts are fixed.

I have tested this and it works. If you install the update twice without repairing permissions in between, the permissions database does not have the permission-000 settings for the files.

    According to Apple support if any of the 'error' messages that are listed on the following link are listed... there is nothing to be concerned about...

    Of course it would be nice if they simply did not appear so that we wouldn't have to take the time to post or go through all of them (I happen to have lots of them after the 10.5.8 update).

    Ran Combo updater again and then once again from an external drive but still had lots of 'error' messages.

    But according to Apple support the messages that are listed (though there are a lot of them) are not to be concerned about.

    RonL sorry but those here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448 are known and have to do with the "l" hardcoded links. Those types we all know can be ignored.

    This is a different issue with ?.......... and the "_CodeSignature" folders and the fact that "Everyone" has no access after the updates and permissions. Apple has not responded to this issue yet to my knowledge.

    I can also confirm that this works...

    I simply installed the combo update yet again, but twice in a row (installed and then immediately installed again) from my internal drive and no more "should be ?---------" permissions.

    I repaired permissions because I am having problems with mobile me syncing and that was one of the troubleshooting suggestions. I keep running the repair and getting the same repair log. No matter how many times I "repair" it always finds the same permissions problems. Is this significant or should I ignore?

    Excellent, I did this twice on two different machines that had exhibited the same problems and everything is back to normal! Yes the "l" link files are there and a few more actually but We can live with that for now. There are no more no access problems in any of the previously mentioned areas in my original post.

    I never tried any of the terminal or other commands mentioned above in other posts here as I was unsure of the end results considering we are dealing with root files and code signatures and resources.

    Still not sure what the cause is of course other than a possible bad coding and clean up in the update patches for the OS but, this does seem to fix the issue at least for me so far and unless it crops up again and doesn't fix with this solution then I'll be reposting about the problem on my end.

    I finally cured the ?------ problem by re installing (installing over the combo install again) using the
    command line installer tool.

    open (mount) the 10.5.8 update, open terminal, at the prompt:
    sudo installer -verboseR -pkg /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Update\ Combined/MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.8.pkg -target / -lang en
    (press return, enter admin password, press return again)

    I'm off to try the back-to-back combo install (I was too nervous to mess with pkgutil). If double install works - and it sounds like it does for many folks - that seems like be a more "gentle" fix than using pkgutil.

    While this is the emerging consensus (repair permissions; apply combo update; apply combo update again; repair permissions) on how to avoid the problem if it afflicts you, it doesn't explain why some systems aren't affected to begin with - or how to tell if you're afflicted beforehand.

    From here on does the "fail-safe" update install rule-of-thumb become repair-install-install-repair?

    COMPLETELY different from when I installed the combo the first time and proceeded to repair the permissions (see my earliest post to this thread). Those all said: *Permissions differ on "System/Library..."* This newest set is entirely related to my HP printer. But the printer works. Ran a few test prints and all is well. For now anyway.

    So should I just leave it alone? Is this as good as it gets?
