Interesting, I have the late 2009 unibody macbook pro 15" model and ordered it with the stock hard drive. I updated it to the Seagate momentous 7200.4 and have not had any of these problems yet. I have had the hard drive since it first was released early this year.

Abraham, Where did you get your drive, and what firmware version/revision do you have?

I also have this issue, and I also have a 320GB hard-drive, and I also am experiencing these issues, though I don't get an audible beep. There is definitely "scrambling"-type clicking going on.

I hope the firmware can resolve this because it is annoying to have to wait for it to stop freezing.

To add to what I said, I got the 320GB with the 7200rpm speed. I wonder if it only affects those with 7200rpm hard-drives? Maybe not.

Ouch. Fizzleation comment makes me worry now (i thought recent macbooks don't have those issues anymore). I just got one thinking the 320GB shouldn't have problems and that the new firmware should keep it from having any problems like other people didn't have issues with the 500 with new firmware except one person. I was seriously considering upgrading to SSD, but I think for that cost I might be better off just living with the problems till either a firmware fix or till the cost of SSD goes down enough to replace it and sell the hard drive on ebay or something.

Same problem here: 15" MBP, 5400 RPM drive, clicking sound, hopeful 7200 isn't the only one with an update.

I just want to add that also have this problem. When I talked to an Apple Genius they were unaware of the issue. This was abound August 7, 09.

Late to this thread (and don't own a new MBP unfortunately - wish I did) but some comments in this thread from some that thought it was coming from the superdrive (others disputed that) reminded me of a tip posted at my website in the July 2nd news page - an Apple doc about 'Resetting' Optical Drive in Mid 2009 MacBook Pro to stop noises on boot/wake.
That page included an audio file sample of the noise. Almost like a beep/squeek/squeal series of noises - but you can also hear what sounds like loud seeking, so I doubted this would be mistaken for HD noise.
However the Apple audio sample for the noises sounds just like the YouTube video sample noises linked in the first post in this thread - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gOhgaIMpPI).

It may not be what everyone in that thread is hearing - but posting as a FYI. If anyone finds this is the source of the noise (and fixes it) send me a mail to news at xlr8yourmac.com - thanks

That sounds awfully familiar to me! I had a powerbook back in the day and it had these horizontal scan lines at the top of the display that were clearly visible. So many people were affected that a post half as bad as this one was posted in the powerbook section. The apple genius had no idea about the issue at the time it was occurring, nor did he believe that it was a defect. It clearly was and I was happily offered a repair, but still. They need to be more informed about these things! I'll bet those darn sales people on the floor in the stores know more about the current issues than them. Tisk tisk!

Being a MacBookPro user for the last three weeks, I've just recently started seeing these same issues. When watching movies or listening to music, I will occasionally hear what sounds like a hard drive disk read error (I've had an external hard drive that died on me about a year ago, so the clicking is very ingrained in my mind) and then the computer will lock up for a few seconds. While a minor annoyance, it is also an unnecessary annoyance and I hope a solution is provided soon, or I might be asking for a refund or a replacement (at least on the drive).

My 15" 3.06 500GB 7200rpm'er is doign the freeze thing too... About 10 seconds of pause with wheel spinning, then it seems to come back. I don't hear it chirping though....

Same just happened to me last week. HD making strange noises, then like an invitable time bomb, it stopped working and only booted with a question mark. I use this as work laptop and this flaw has effectively short stopped my productivity in a time critical phase of our project. I recently switched to a Mac for the first time and my experience has been dismal so far

i recently upgraded my HD to a 500gb seagate none G drive (ST9500325AS)... no click or beep but my computer constantly freezes! seeing some other users having problem with hitachi 500gb drives... could the size (500gb) be the problem?!?

I bought the latest Macbook Pro 17" with the 500 MB hard drive and have been getting the intermittent beep. It has been driving me a little nuts so starting looking for a solution and stumbled upon this thread. Wow, I had no idea what a big issue this is. Hopefully Apple will take this seriously with so many reporting this.

Don't know if this helps, but I have a Macbook pro 17" A1212 (Core 2 Duo 2.33GHz) so it's a little bit older.

In any case, about 4 weeks ago, I upgraded the computer's HDD from a stock 160GB to a 500GB 7200 16MB cache Seagate Momentus. The specific model installed was "ST9500420AS." revision "0002SDM1" I am unable to verify the sound, as the unit's fans usually drown out any observable noise. However, I have noticed an uptaking of "pinwheel-ing", especially after a period of little HDD activity. It's almost as if the drive goes to un-announced sleep. Note: HDD power-saver is OFF, as is sleep mode.

The reason I bring this up is that perhaps there is a wider range of affected drives. This drive was acquired and installed at Best Buy. The drive was new and in retail packaging.

I'd be happy to provide additional details if they would assist in identifying firmware or anything else that would assist the troubleshooting process.

    Thanks, and good luck!

Tried to live with it, but after 10 days holiday back to work, instantly got RSI from this.
Contacted Apple, same story about switching off the Sudden Motion Sensor. Not any result so that will be another hour on the phone. Just want to upgrade to an SSD..
