Restore: Unknown Error 1418?

Hey there,

My iPod (Video, 30GB) died on me two days ago; a sad iPod kept coming on the screen and it told me to connect my iPod to iTunes to restore. But whenever I try, it always says that I can't restore it because "an unknown error occured (1418)". I tried everything in the support pages (using appleipod.bat; reinstalling the USB drive), but nothing works. What can I do?

PS. Whenever I connect my iPod to my computer, it takes a looong time to be recognized because it keeps saying there is very little battery (even if it's been plugged to my computer for hours) and its not detected by my battery charger. Also, the screen keeps hanging after failed attempts to restore.

If your iPod is recognized in "my computer", changing the drive letter can sometimes resolve this "can't mount iPod" issue.

Click on control panel/admin tools/computer management/disk management/right click on the iPod to re-assign the drive letter.

Choose something lower down the alphabet, say 'M' or something similar.

The iPod can be confused by any other storage devices assigned a similar drive letter even though they may not connected at the same time.

Also, I remember that simply forcing the iPod into disk mode, then connecting it to the computer, would ocassionally help with a "can't mount iPod" message using the iPod Updater (this is odd... I feel like I'm going back in time by a year 😉

For details on disk mode, see this:

Putting iPod into disk mode

Other than that, it may indeed be drive letter confusion as Jeff suggests, or some other sort of unknown USB/connection type of issue.

EDIT: Another thought - try connecting your iPod to a rear USB port on your computer. That technique has helped with 1418-esque problems before, as well.

I can't change the letter because when I go to disk management because the iPod isn't there, even if a "removable disk" is recognized in My Computer.

I can't put the iPod into disk mode either because when I hold the menu+center buttons, and then hold the play+center buttons, a sad iPod comes out.

I'm using a laptop right now, so I just keep trying all my USB ports out. I tried it on my desktop, on the back USB ports, but then I got the "There was a problem downloading the iPod software for the iPod "iPod". The requested resource was not found." message. On that computer, I had iTunes 7.2.

Oh, and by the way, the iPod updater has now decided to not detect my iPod completely. It keeps saying "Plug in an iPod to update it." How come the problems are never consistent?

What am I supposed to do now???

Sigh,
Jo
