extract audio - and then?

iMovie newbie here
I'm only using it because I want to extract audio from a video clip (which I was told iMovie could do) and get it into an mp3 file. Let's call the video "aggravation".
I've figured out this much so far:
The video was in avi format, which apparently displeased iPhoto, and it converted it to MP4 format. OK, I'm easy to get along with.
Under "Advanced", I chose "Extract Audio"
It did this, and now I have "aggravation - audio" in the top of 3 sections on the bottom of the screen.
NOW what? I want that extracted audio as an mp3 file, but I can't figure how to get it "out" of iMovie.
What's my next (and hopefully last) step???

I have searched all over in these forums, and found questions that LOOKED like they would answer this question, but they didn't.
I did find one thread where the solution seemed like a work-around. It involved exporting the video to QuickTime, choosing "sound to aiff", then importing it into iTunes, and selecting "convert to mp3".
Seems to me there should be a more direct method ....

G4 1.2 GHz iBook, Mac OS X (10.4.8), iMovie 4.0.1

... no, it is a multi-step process, 'cause Macs don't support mp3 as an export format..

no need to extract audio...
import your file into iM.. (besides: iM isn't made for .avi... ).. anyhow.

now, choose 'Expport/Quicktime/Expert Settings'
then, in the following drop-down dialog choose 'aiff' ...
that results in a audio-only-file of your avi ...

drag the resulting file into iTunes... and select 'convert to mp3' ...

Wow, you guys are FAST!!!
Must be a characteristic of people with an umlaut in their last name!! ;-P

This doesn't seem very Mac-like!
You have this extracted audio file right there waiting for you, and you have to turn cartwheels to "get" it into an audio file!!!!

OK, now I have a dilemma.
Both of you solved the question - at the very same minute! So, it's a tie!!!!
Is it possible to mark BOTH of your posts "solved"???
I have a feeling I can't .... 😟

Thanks a bunch, guys - your input didn't do much to help me decide!!

Well, I was feeling a little feisty tonight, so the idea of "leveling" someone appealed to me!!! ;-P

So I gave the "solved" to Bengt, and the "helpful" to Karsten.

I looked it up, and I couldn't mark you both for solving it. I suspected as much.

Again, thanks to both of you, and have a great day!!!
