cant print 4x6 photos

I recently bought a HP photosmart c5180 printer. The problems are
1) when ever i try printing a photo it always prints on the 8x11 letter paper.
I think i've tried all the different paper selections but it always seem to print
on the letter.
2) how do i tell the printer to print on the photo paper?
3) how do i print the photos w/o any boarders the "print borderless photo"
option doesn't light up. I see it there but it won't let me select it.
Thanks for any help. Like i've said in earlier post i'm new to computers so i'm still learning. This discussion board has been a great help. Thanks Again!

You should still be able to use those directions for your camera.

Use "Page Setup" from the menu under File to get started when you want to print. Do that first, before selecting 'Print' and then you will see the options for type of paper, size of prints. You need to make the initial choices there, and then use the printer-specific ones when you have selected which photos to print.

Still no go. I can't get the printer to select the paper in the photo tray (4x6). it always prints on the letter paper. If I go into the HP device manager and select copies/paper 4x6/print. It will take paper from the photo tray but not print anything on it. I've unloaded and reloaded the software (from the disc that came with the printer and down loaded from HPs website) atleast 3 times. I'm going to keep at this till I get ot. Any other suggestions would be welcomed. THANKS

When you are in iPhoto, with your photo selected to print, and you go to PageSetup, what choices do you have? Should be something like this:

Settings: (Page Attributes)
Format for: (Select your printer)
Paper size: (Choose the 4x6 here)
Orientation: (Your choice)
Scale: (100%)

So you should select the paper size here first.

Then, click on Print and you should see a preview of your photo on the left, and something like this on the right:

Printer: (select your printer)
Presets: (choose your paper type)
Paper: (4x6)
Style: (Full Page)

And then options for margins, zoom/crop and a few other buttons. If you don't see these options in your print window, click on the 'Standard' button and see if you have it after that.

FI you have it there, set like this, you should be able to get 4x6 prints.

Everything is set as you suggest EXCEPT Paper: on the print screen. I don't have 4x6 as an option. It has w288h432 in the preset. 4x6 doesn't even show up in the pulldown window. I think the problem maybe this (but I don't know how to solve it): When i go into my system preferences/printer&fax/printer browser. I select Photosmart C5100 series from the list (only option) it then tells me to "select a driver or printer model" I select HP but there is no Photosmart C5180 or C5100 series listed under the models. There are only two "HP Photosmart" printers:P1000 & P1100- Gimp-Print 5.0.0-beta2. Ive tried selecting both of them but neither one gives me a 4x6 paper option. I think this maybe my problem. My printer series or model isn't listed. Any more help would be greatly appriciated.

Did you ever get this resolved? I just bought a 6180, which I think is the next generation. From all I've been able to read, the only way I can print a photo 4 x 6 is from a memory card. If this is true, I am just floored. The printer is high tech enough to print wirelessly, yet you can't just print a photo from a software program on the computer?

Is this true?

Hey there, I'm a new Mac user (well, reborn Mac user) and have encountered the same issue trying to print 4x6 photos from iPhoto using the HP 5180. Were you (or anyone else out there) ever able to figure out how to print directly from iPhoto, or are you still transferring your images to your desktop and then printing directly from the HP software. I will say, not being able to print directly from iPhoto is a total let down 😟 It took some major work and promise-making to convince my PC loving husband to spend the money on the Mac...and so far, he's feeling pretty swindled and I'm afraid a bit resentful. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I am having the same issue with my C7180 through wifi. Just to let you know that it worked fine before Leopard. I used to print to the photo tray with no issues with iPhoto 7 with Tiger. I am assuming that this might get fixed when HP updates the drivers. I am getting it to work fine from the memory card. As most people I can't get the scanner to work anymore either. I am anxiously waiting for the update from HP for all these issues. Supposedly we are going to see an update to the drivers around the end of the year.

Hello there.

Leopard and HP 6180 here. Printing works fine with IPhoto8 (and worked fine before with Tiger and '06)

But I ran into the same trouble - several DinA4 (German Letter format) Sheets were wasted trying to get the d*mn printer to use it's 4x6 (=10x15cm's) photo sheets.

It seems to me that one must select the correct Papersize and Layout twice: First in iPhoto, then, a second time, in the print setup dialogue.
With HP, the print setup dialogue is really tricky. Several Menus to plough trough, the most important in this case is the paper handling and quality. Somewhere you can select it.

The problem is: When you set up everything right in iPhoto and click on "print", a new dialogue window opens where you can adjust the HP Settings. Most of the time, this window appears without it's many submenus. But there is a small triangle button which opens a bigger dialogue window. Now there are these maaaany options.

I found out that beneath the correct sheet tray (main or photo tray), there is another menu where you can also select the correct paper format. So: One has to select not only the correct tray, but also the correct format, and this not only in iPhoto, but also in the HP Print Menu.

Isn't this a nuisance? Thank God there's a way to make presets which you can quickselect. Did you know? I learned it the hard way...

Well, after telling both iPhoto and my HP Menu what i want, voilá: There comes the sun! Nice 4x6 High Quality iPhoto Printout. Didn't use the original HP Ink BTW. Spoiled it all trying to get the right setup. Used my sweat instead...
