camera in use by another application

Lucky enough to just acquire the Sony HDR-HC7 and have had some trouble getting iChat to recognise it. Kept getting the message camera in use by another application when it was not and all other applications were turned off.

The solution posted for an earlier model of this range of high definition camcorders was posted by http://discussions.apple.com/profile.jspa?userID=861384 and it is: change the rec mode from HD 1080i to DV. For use in iMovie 6 when using it in live camera mode, it is necessary to change back again. Much appreciation to the contributor from Athens.

Just a couple of observations since the latest update of Quicktime has been blamed for many things.

In trying to resolve some non related problems linked to posting a podcast with pics on the web, I was recommended to trash some QuickTime caches in the Library. The problem was it also got rid of a Quicktime component which I needed to get iMovie recognise my new camera. The computer fortunately told me I was missing the component and instructed me to re-install iLife 06. I did and the camcorder worked in iMovie. So I guess I am saying be careful not to trash irreversibly.

Secondly, I was getting a lot of problems initially in live camera mode in iMovie 6. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it did not. It took a Diskwarrior rebuild to sort the problem out. So heavy duty maintenance is sometimes the answer too.

Sorry to stray away from iChat but, when you are using a camcorder in to applications like myself, thought the info might be of interest.

After upgrading from 10.3.9 to Tiger, suddenly I could no longer use my digital camcorder for both iChat and stop-motion animation using iStopMotion. I got an error in iChat that said: "Your camera is in use by another application." But it clearly wasn't.

I have to say, the people at Apple support were real jerks about this. I can no longer get Apple Care on a three year old eMac, but I was willing to pay the $49 for "incident support." But they said they wouldn't support a non-Apple camera, or a third-party software product. I suggested that I just go back to 10.3.9, but they said in order to do that, I'd have to do an "erase and install." I knew that would create all kinds of new problems, so I seemed to be SOL. But the simple act of reinstalling Quicktime 7 solved it. Sad that the Apple support people didn't know enough to suggest that.
