Mac Book Pro Really Hot

Hi All,

I have one of the first Mac Book pros, a 1.83 dual core with 1gb of RAM. Over the last month I have noticed that it is getting really hot. And twice I have had it where the fans go into overdrive and it keeps getting hotter when this happens. I reboot and then it will be OK.

Last night when using it the fans were not making a noise but the bottom of the machine was like touching a hot iron.

The machine works fine, no crashes or anything. Can anyone tell me what temperature this laptop should run at so I can monitor to see if it is in fact overheating. Or any other tricks tips I can try.

Typically the machine is six weeks out of warranty now.

I have the SMC firmware update installed as well.

Thanks in advance.

mike,

i have exactly the same problem (1,83 core duo)...
everything was fine until i installed the battery update. after that it became very hot for a few days and went back to normal again. now, just as you described, over the last month or maybe three weeks my mbp got really hot. it never was this hot before. the temperatures are as usual about 61 degrees C under normal load / when idle and the fans seem to work normal, too. but still the hinge over the f1 key is very hot. i have no crashes or other problems so far an i am very happy with my mbp - but i find it very strange to happen just recently after over one year of usage; and then you come up with the same machine and the same problem!

edit:
you should (as far as i know) see temperatures around 60 degrees celsius when idle or under normal load and around 82 degrees when under full load. the fans should run normally at 2000 rpm and under full load at around 4800 rpm - that's at least my experience with a 1,83 cd...

i use this widget to monitor btw. http://islayer.com/index.php?op=item&id=7

please tell me your stats after you tried it out tonight,

j.

The last update may have altered the temperature table which dictates when the fans turn on or how fast the fans should spin. By delaying the fan action you increase battery life but likewise the heat increases.

As the other poster mention everyone has an opinion of what too hot is, so download a temp program. I find that my macbook operates between 40 and 60c normally and can spike higher before the fans kick in. I expect the MacBook Pros to operate similarly.

I have the same problem. I have a first generation MBP with Intel Core Duo 1.83 and 512 RAM. The first year it was all alright, but after that it began to overheat a lot! It really burns specially on the top of the keyboard area (just above the Function Keys F1, F2, F3...).

I wonder if it's something I should be worried about or if it's just the way it works. I have AppleCare extended warranty. Should I call them?

Thanks!

I believe that if you paid for AppleCare, you shouldn't think twice about calling Apple about anything. It costs you nothing and if something is wrong it's better to get it fixed sooner rather than later. There might be a simple fix. You have nothing to lose.

I am experiencing VERY hot conditions on my mac. Installed the Hardware Monitor and I am reading the following conditions:

30 degrees C Ambient Air
92.0 degrees C CPU A Temp Diode
42.0 degrees C Enclosure Bottomside
61.0 degrees C Graphic Processor Chip 1
69.0 degrees C Graphics Procesor Heatsink 1
43.0 degrees C Main Heatsink 1
46.0 degrees C Main Heatsink 2
57.0 degrees C Memory Controller smart disk
44.0 degrees C
85 degrees C CPU Core 1
90 degrees C CPU Core 2

I am also experiencing poor battery life as I believe that the fans are running at max speed constantly.

Currently as I read these settings, i am running Safari, Hardware Monitor, and iWeb only.

please help.

Hi All,

I put the software on at the weekend and the Processor A seems to generaaly run at 70 degrees or slightly higher with an average fan spped of 1000 to 1300 rpm. This is when the machine was running at about 15% on the processor. At this temperature if you touch the casing above the F keys it is that hot that you cannot keep your finger on it.

From looking at some of the other stats I see other people seem to be running at the same temps or even higher. Still think this is to hot, surely you should not be able to potentially burn yourself by touching the machine.

Also on a separate note I noticed on the stats about the battery and it said 66 cycles, does anyone know what this is?

Cheers

Mike
