HD SDI versus Component... Which has a higher bit rate?

New system is up and running! I'm importing HDCAM footage through my decklink HD Extreme. Wondering what would yield a higher bit rate- the HD SDI input or the component input...? SDI is giving me about 95 mbps, but 4:2:2 uncompressed 8-bit HD is supposed to be as high as 150 mbps.

Side note: I'm using a BNC cable for the SDI input.

Same bit rate, only better quality via HD SDI.

Make sure you are using an HD SDI BNC cable...not just any BNC cable will do.

If you capture via Component...then HD SDI...you'll note the same bit rate.

SDI is giving me about 95 mbps, but 4:2:2 uncompressed 8-bit HD is supposed to be as high as 150 mbps.

AS HIGH AS...meaning there is a range. uncompressed 10-bit HD ranges between 150 and 180 MB/s...depending on the frame rate...23.98, 29.97, 59.94...and the size...720p, 1080p.

TOO MANY SECRETS...er...OPTIONS.

Shane,

The deck rental place told me there is no difference between the HD SDI BNC and the normal BNC. I trust your opinion (and the tech support at blackmagic's) over theirs.

If I wait until tomorrow and get a real HD SDI cable, would it give me a better quality capture and a higher bit rate? Or is it such a minute difference that it's not worth the wait?

Actually, Enzo, there is a big difference in cable and connectors. For this application, something along the lines of Belden 1505A cable (Canare and Gepco make equivalents) with a true 75 ohm connector made by someone reputable like Kings, Canare or Trompeter is almost an industry standard for SDI as well as HD-SDI. Markertek is a good resource for prebuilt cables with cables and connectors that you specify, so is Gepco.

Personally, I make any cable I need (computer cables excluded) and it's a very good skill to have and I advise everyone to develop.

Thanks for the words guys. I just spoke with a friend of mine who runs cable at a video rental house. His advice was similar- as long as you are running a 75 -Ohm cable and if it it short (under 6 feet), you should be fine.

Regardless, I'm going to go to Pacific Radio today and pick up some nice HD SDI specific ones!

Wish I has as hardcore as you Zeb... do you make your own RAM too? 🙂
