Mac Book Pro 15" to Philips 42" Plasma Display

When I connect my MBP to Plasma via (out) HDMI/VGA adapter to (in) VGA in on plasma, I cannot get the display to fill the whole screen. The resolution I select is 1024x768 and it is short left & right. What do I need to do to make the Plasma mirror the MBP. The Plasma is model Philips 42FD9954/69S I purchased new in 2003. It has DVI input & 2 VGA as the source inputs. The only cables I have are VGA. Any solution and ideas are very welcome.
