Wifi connection bad since upgrade to 10.4.10

I have been using my MacBook now for a month. Since I had it connected to my network without any problem. A WDS based wifi network with 4 nodes. Since I upgraded the macbook to 10.4.10 the connection gets unreliable.

after some time I notice that Google Notifier shows an exclamation mark. The available SID's are not shown, than just the one shown as being connected to. Turning airport off and on again shows my list anymore. And trust me, there should be at least 5 available SID's in this location of use. The only way to resolve it is by restarting the system. Even once, the system crashed when turning the airport off.

Does anyone have the same problems???

My VAIO SZ2 does connect properly to the wireless network, just like phone and pda (E60 and 770). The network uses is a WPA personal with a preshared key. Based on linksys routers with DD-WRT and OpenWRT.

10.5.3 is practically here (apparently)... http://apcmag.com/osx_1053_about_tohit.htm

Could this contain the fix we need?! There are references to 'Airport' fixes but not specifically to Macbooks - who knows? Anyone who understands this stuff might be able to shed some light/hope.

Then, the proof is in the pudding (Mmm... pudding).

Here's hoping - ?!

I'm starting to get REALLY tired of this problem that has apparently has not been addressed for months. I have installed the latest AirPort update, hoping desperately that things would improve, but no luck. My connection drops every few seconds, and not being able to read and write files on a network share reliably or having to click on links twice or more on every other occasion drives me absolutely mad. The WiFi realiability is nothing short of abysmal.

It's absolutely frustrating, and does not make Apple look good AT ALL. I am a Windows-to-Linux-to-Mac OS X-convert who had hoped to have the best of all worlds, after all Mac OS was supposed to be so darn stable, and two of the most important things for me, Samba and WiFi support, have not worked well for me, to say the least.

My wife with her Windows notebook just can't believe it, and does not experience any kind of problems. My WiFi router is a Linksys WRT54GS v.4 (original firmware), but since my wife has no problems, I doubt that matters.

I cannot honestly say that the switch to Apple / Mac OS X has been worth it so far ... 😟

Has anything anyone has suggested so far worked for some of you? Or are most of you still having the same problem I have? Does the upgrade to Leopard improve anything?

I am beginning to lose faith that Apple are going to sort out this problem. Seems to me that the upgrade to 10.4.10 has revealed some problem in a considerable number of airport cards. In my own case, it doesn't matter which router I use; at home I have a Linksys and elsewhere I have tried to connect to a Belkin. Both initially connect and work beautifully, then after a few minutes the dropouts start happening literally every few seconds. The Belkin router is the absolute latest one, but my MacBook still keeps dropping the connection. Also, the problem occurs both when on the power adapter and on the battery, although the power adapter does result in marginally less dropouts.

I WISH Apple would do something. The latest Airport software update didn't improve anything. If a new Airport card is the only solution, then I think I would happily pay for this just to be able to use my MacBook without constantly losing WIFI. Apple's silence on this well known issue of wireless connectivity (look at the size of this thread!) does little to inspire confidence amongst their loyal users.

I love my MacBook, but I do wish that we could all have a solution to this annoying problem, even if it is to simply have a new Airport card fitted.

Yeah, it's frustrating, alright. I bought my MacBook almost two years ago. Wireless had been working great (Linksys Router) the whole time. The problems started not long after I "upgraded" to Leopard! And now, anytime I'm outside the range of about 50 ft (and sometimes within that range), the Macbook loses the connection. What's annoying is Apple's "Conservatism" about the it treats problems (shhhhh, don't say anything about; ignore 'em). I own aapl, but am getting really fed up with the QA controls--or lack thereof. My wife's MB Pro died after about 18 months. I had to replace a key screen component on my MB. Getting a little fed up with all the care and feeding with laptops--I despise Windows, but at least their stuff works (and yes, I know it's buggy and unsafe...)

I have struggled with the MacBook reducing signal strength for a while now.

I just tried the below steps and it is the first thing I have tried in a while that has kept my AirPort connection stable.

The idea came from here: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20031116054614609

In Leopard, go to System Preferences.
Choose Network
Choose AirPort
Choose Advanced
Choose Ethernet
In the Configure dropdown choose Manually
In the MTU dropdown choose Custom
In the edit field that appears type in 1492
Press OK
Press Apply

Turn off your AirPort connection, and turn it back on.

See if it fixes your problem.

Good luck.

Hi all,
Yet another Macbook owner with Wi-fi issues here.

With me I've not noticed a particular pattern yet (at random intervals with or without mains plugged in).

It's only been happening for about a week, and I am on 10.4.11 rather than 10.4.10.

Are there any other users with issues on 10.4.11?

I'm also using WPA encryption, automatic channel selection and set to use either 801.22b or g (not N).

Cheers
