10.4.10 and wireless problems

Hello,

I think I may have the 10.4.10 problem -- here are my symptoms:

Wireless icon in toolbar shows full strength
Network control panel shows that I'm pulling a valid IP from the wireless router (in my case, 192.168.1.2)
'Network Diagnostics' initially reports problems sometimes, but then figures out that everything is OK
Router admin shows that internet is working, and indeed can connect through ethernet from router, and router is pulling a 'real' ip address from modem
Firefox, Safari, Mail, Software update, etc can not connect to the internet.

If Network Diagnostics can see that the settings are valid, why can't TCP/IP apps work? Is there some kind of bindings thing I can run that would work?

I'm currently typing this with an ethernet cord hooked in, which is SO late 90's.

This all happened when I updated to 10.4.10.

a) How do you downgrade to 10.4.9?
b) How do we notify Apple of this problem?
c) Is it MacBooks only, or everyone?

Thanks all!

Macbook Black, Mac OS X (10.4.3), 2 gigs RAM, creative apps

Yes, I have the identical problem. It's driving me crazy!

It has nothing to do with my router or anything else. I run XP via boot camp on the same computer with no problems. It happened at exactly the same time as I updated to 10.4.10.

I can sometimes overcome it by turning airport off and on, other times I have to restart. If I am downloading a large file, it will eventually stall.

If anybody has any solution to this, I will be forever grateful!

Because (and I might be wrong, but) 192.168.1.2 is NOT a real or valid IP for which the computer access the internet. That address is the address of your router. Meaning, if you type that address in any web browser, and are in the vicinity of your router, it would open a window or something for you to change the settings of your router (at least, this is how it works for me).

SO - you can try to release and renew your IP address to see if that helps (not sure how you would do that for your router, but like I said, I do it by typing the address in my web browser and then typing in the password). Or just simply unplug the cable modem and router for 2 minutes, then replug them in to see if that corrects the issue.

Again, I could be waaaay off.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Thanks for the response D, but actually the 192.168.1.x range is what my router gives -- my 'real' IP address goes to the router (a cheap netgear, but it's never given me any trouble) and the router assigns an internal IP to the wireless devices.

So my 'real' (external) IP shows up in the router control panel (68.160.x.x @ last check) or via whatismyip.com etc, but the router also gives 192.168 addresses via DHCP. (In my experience, if the computer is truly not pulling an IP, it assigns itself one in the 169.254.x.x range.)

That's what confuses me about this -- everything is working as it should... even Network Diagnostics (or whatever it's called) reports a working connection... and yet the connection somehow isn't working for any internet services.

For a minute I thought maybe it was a binding type thing, where the TCP/IP request didn't know where to go, but it happens with mail and FTP as well, so that means that all the ports are blocked, right?

I'm completely befuddled. Anyone know how to reinstall 10.4.9 just in case it's that? I downloaded the updater, but the installer won't let me downgrade...

I don't think you'd need to reinstall OS X.
You should continue determining what works, and what doesn't.
OS X's Network Utility can help determine if there is network connectivity inside your LAN (ping your router), outside your LAN (ping a known IP address on the internet), if name lookups are working (lookup)... all these things can also be done from the command line in a Terminal window.

This is definitely a 10.4.10 update problem, because this same exact issue started happening with my Mac after i updated to 10.4.10.

I'm also using the new Safari Beta 3, and just downloaded the most recent update, but its all my internet apps that stop having connectivity: Safari, Firefox, Opera, Mail, etc.

Does anyone have a solution for this? Is there a way to bump down to 10.4.9?

On a side note, Safari crashes about twice a day now, and i've tried to report this when i'm prompted by OS X to report, but by that time my internet is down, and I cant report.

Also, my sister is on her Dell laptop and has full internet connectivity at the time that i dont.

Hi,

also updated @ another thread, but on my setup changing or disabling WEP/WPA etc didn't work, nor did turning off and on the airport, etc etc.

I ended up reinstalling my OS from the system disks, but only after completely ----ing up my OS using Pacifist and the 10.4.9 combo update. 😉

@proximus: Interesting theory on encryption keys -- can you set the key retention in your router settings? I suppose that defeats the purpose, though. As I said my network didn't work even w/ no protection, but switching to WEP until 10.4.11 wouldn't have been bad...

I looked for that and saw no such timer.

As is pretty obvious by now, this is a 10.4.10 problem. I unboxed my new MacBook yesterday and ran fine on the default 10.4.9 installation all morning before letting the 10.4.10 update run. The problems started immediately after coming up on 10.4.10.

I hope this is addressed ASAP, seems to be a LOT of people having this problem.

I'm glad you mentioned this because I noticed the same thing. With 10.4.10, the wireless would go out as a rule, but whenever I plugged in the MacBook to charge the battery while I was trying to figure this problem out, the wireless seems to come back on again more often than not.

I wonder if this has to do with some power management feature that may be built into the Atheros drivers or Max OS X itself.

Incidently, I am typing this on my MacBook reinstalled with a fresh copy of 10.4.9. No problems as of yet, but I am going to keep trying out the wireless without updating just to be sure that it is a problem with 10.4.10.

I have the same exact problem as described. But I also having panic errors with the airport card. all after the update it seems. Its odd you have it and just lose it out of nowhere. But if you put it to sleep and turn it back on you have it again. so network setting are good cuz it can get it. (xp in bootcamp works tho.) I already talked to the apple store they said bring it in cuz the airport might be failing
