Cannot import photos from SD card into USB card reader after 10.4.10 update

Prior to the 10.4.10 update, I used a USB media card reader to import photos from my Canon camera's SD card and it worked fine. I just tried to do that for the first time since I installed the 10.4.10 update, and now the memory card doesn't show up in iPhoto as a disk from which to import photos.
I'm back to transferring pictures through the cable, which is a bit of a pain and a waste of a new media card reader. Is there a way to restore this ability to use the card reader?
Note: I switched from Windows to Mac in February 2007, and except for having to hunt for media card readers that work with the Mac and a few kernel panics due, I think, to a problem with my Logitech mouse drivers, it's been pretty painless.

A number of USB problems after this upgrade have been reported. As far as I have been able to see, the only available fix is to undo the upgrade. (I've had a problem with an external drive, but am waiting to see if Apple addresses this soon before trying to restore 10.4.9.) You can search this forum for a description of how to downgrade. Meanwhile, as a work-around, you might try connecting your camera with the SD card in it instead of using the card reader.

I have a similar problem after updating to Mac OS 10.4.10 (intel) on my Macbook.

Since the update my Crucial Compact Flash card reader has stopped working.

The Compact Flash Cards (1Gb Crucial and 4Gb Sandisc) have been formated and written on a Canon EOS 300D.

The main symptom on Mac OS is that it keeps trying to access the card for ever, there is no error message.

The Crucial Compact Flash card reader and Compact Flash Cards work happily on my Windows XP PC.

My conclusion is that it is a Mac OS 10.4.10 problem.

Islandgirl, welcome, I am not sure if this what you want, but if you go from the Finder under the Apple to System Preferences/CDs & DVDs and at "When you Insert a Picture CD" select Open iPhoto. This will now take you directly to Import whenever a picture media is inserted.

This problem is not generic to 10.4.10 -- but it is specific to Intel based Macs. I have the same problem with a Zynet 8-in-1 USB-2.0 card reader. It fails to mount on 10.4.10 Intel based Macs but works fine on 10.4.10 PPC macs (and on 10.3.9 PPC too)

It is very annoying because connecting through my phone is very slow, especially when updating 2GB of MP3s.

The reader, with card inserted, is recognized, but no storage media is seen and of course it does not mount as a disk device like it should:

USB Storage Device:

Version: 1.00
Bus Power (mA): 500
Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: Generic
Product ID: 0x3260
Serial Number: 20030903213338562
Vendor ID: 0x0aec

There are no relevant error messages.

I hope Apple's reading these posts -- this sounds like a major, but all too common, FUBAR in the driver code. A fast fix would be very much appreciated!

Hi again, I just did a search for card readers in the Intel section and there isn't any. And the one in the iPhoto section that relates to this topic is at this time still unanswered.

I have three reader here, at least three at work and I was able to borrow two others from the neighbors. They were all different brands and various price ranges, but they worked just fine.

One thing you might try is going to Applications/Disk Utilities and see if the disk is present in the left hand column. If so see if you mount it from the upper tabs. I was able to mount and unmount each one of the disks here. And each would respond by mounting and unmounting on the desktop.

Please do not Hijack another persons thread. If you submit a separate post it will get more attention and not look as if you are getting helped when in reality you are not. This post looks like one person getting a lot of answers, when it is really many people with similar issues getting no answers at all. Many troubleshooter here will not even open it.

ps. Finder/Preferences/Show these item on the desktop: I am assuming you all have this box checked.
