It depends whether you will be syncing or streaming your content. To stream your itunes library you will need your pc/mac running and itunes open. If your itunes library is not always available you may need to consider syncing some or all of the content in it. You may not wish to sync all of your library but you should also purchase with future requirements in mind.

I'd say it probably is worth buying the extra capacity unless you intend to stream a lot of media.

Bear in mind that the 40GB AppleTV only has about 32.84 GB capacity as the 40GB drive refers to non-binary GB so it's not actually 40GB of storgae as you might expect. On top of that several GB are taken up by the AppleTV OS and restore partition.

I stream all my movies, have 31.08GB of audio on the AppleTV currently, 204MB of photos, 1.26GB free space and 307MB of 'other' files.

As soon as my free space runs out I will have to do some tedious tinkering to delete audio that I rarely listen to from the AppleTV.

Movies are loaded to AppleTV before music. How are
you able to load all of your music and stream movies?
Did that change (along with photos) in the latest
update?

Select the AppleTV device in iTunes.

You should have the following tabs:

Summary/Movies/TV Shows/Music/Podcasts/Photos

Under Music I've got Sync Music ticked and All songs and playlists selected.

For Movies I've only got Sync Selected Movies ticked but haven't selected any actual movies.

For TV Shows and Podcasts the Sync box is unticked.

For Photos I sync photos from a manually selected folder.
