Safari slow, actually all browsers slow

Geez. I'm in ultimate computer frustration. Long story short, I re-installed OS X.4.3 due to a seperate issue. Now, all of my browsers (Safari, IE, and Firefox) are sluggish at best. I typically only use Safari but tried IE and Firefox for diognostic purposes. They start loading, but then stop. Sometimes the finish up but often times they don't. Never quicker than several minutes. I have DSL. I have spent hours on the phone with my service provider and they simply can't find anything wrong on their end. Email and instant Messaging work perfect. It's just the browsers. Does anyone have any ideas? I have reset Safari, cleared the cache, repaired permissions, reset the router and DSL box, unplugged the computer for 15 minutes, ran spyware....all to no avail. I have OS X.4.8 in my hands but don't want to open it if that won't help. Please help me?? Thanks in advance...

Hello Karen,

Ist) You need to understand this_> 10.4.8 & 10.4.3 is the same os X Tiger which is now at version 10.4.10.

You CAN get to 10.4.10 with what you have installed right now 10.4.3
It is a waste of your money to keep 10.4.8 return it.

Click on the Finder (screen) see the Finders menu bar?
Under the Blue Apple->click on About this Mac..... what does read 10.??

There has to be a reason why you can not update

• How did you try to update? Via your Software update,
Under the Blue Apple or on Apple downloads?

• Who is your ISP & how do you connect? Is it ethernet or wirelessly?

Please post back.

Karen, I would suggest you upgrade to 10.4.9 and Safari 2.0.x. Also, be sure you have the latest Firefox. Internet Explorer is no longer compatible with the Mac (check Microsoft).

I use Firefox mostly because Safari 2.0 did seem a bit slow and there are sites that just don't play nice with the Apple OS. I'm trying Safari 3.0.2 beta .. much faster, but still a beta and buggy (see other discussion threads on that subject).

Best wishes,

ed

Eme,
I'm going bonkers. First of all, thank you for encouraging me to try the software update (which I had tried several times but it wouldn't let me upgrade to 10.4.1) as the final time I tried, it worked so I am now successfully running 10.4.10.

I connect via DSL and have been in a lot of contact with my server (local). My bandwidth speed is fine and according to them, everything looks good on their end.

Both Safari and Firefox are sluggish and unpredictable yet. Firefox is version 1.5.0.12 and Safari is version 2.0.2.

Both browsers begin loading but stop short of completing. Safari usually says at the bottom "Completed 43 of 45 items" for example. Often it finishes up by saying "There was one error opening the page" If I click kon my Home Page icon, it is taking over a minute for Yahoo to come up.

The first time this morning I clicked on my .Mac tab, I got the message that Safari couldn't find the website www.mac.com. The second time I clicked on it, .Mac popped right up. But, when I then clicked on "Support" to access this forum, I waited several minutes for the page to load.

On another note, I just tried to access a web site and finally got a message saying I am not connected to the internet - at the same tiime I received several emails and instant messages.

In general, some of my sites pop right up, others struggle or don't come at all. My email and instant messaging are working fine. I hope I am makiing sense. Sometimes I know I don't have all the correct computer terms....Please let me know if you need me to be more clear. I dread the thought of bringing my computer in as our local Mac Guys aren't the friendliest.

Karen (ps: thanks for saving me $129 oon 10.4.8)

I'm having the same problems since today. Internet access is very slow and Safari crashes most of the time and Firefox is slow as well. I have to use Firefox to type this. When I do a download test from a website I get the expected speed but it takes minutes for the pages to load.

Also other apps that require internet access fail like software-update.

I'm not sure whether it is my ISP or Apple.

Hi Karen,

Glad you finally could get your os updated, sorry this has been so frustrating for you.:(

Did you run disk permissions repair after the os update, take a look at this users tip if you don't know how to, Travis A.'s Regular Maintenance/General Troubleshooting & this article as well, http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607640

Hi, Karen,

thanks for the reply, I hope they get it squared away, a good idea to take it in.

When i posted to you yesterday (twice because it was chopped up the post was there in it's entirety when I viewed it,
Waa, most all of it is gone again I see, odd odd odd!!
Good thing for me I use textedit for my replies, b/c this will not do, left as is.

This below is what was somehow edited out twice!!! I omit what has been posted b4 & 2x at that.
It covers DNS & more... for when you get your mac back. Please let us know what transpires, okay?

Best of luck,

A note on updating your Apple software, do not use your mac when an update is optimizing it can cause problems.

-----------------•

Quit Safari,
Click on the Finder's Icon in the Dock.
In The Finders window, sidebar, click on the Home icon
(if Finder prefs. are not set to open home)
go to the following path I move the cookies file & the Safari cache folder to the trash.

Home~/Library/Cookies folder/ cookies.plist

Home~/Library/Caches folder/ Safari cache

Launch Safari any better?

----------------------------•

Karen, Safari should be at @ version 2.0.4, I'm not sure why your copy is at 2.0.2, are you sure it is so?
Get info on Safari from the Applications folder,
Click once to highlight Safari, control click to bring up the contextual menu
Get info, what is the size, created & modified date?

You can download a 2.0.4 version from here, Safari if you want a simply way to
bring it to the correct version, thanks to one of the helpers in Safari forum.

i think you ought to Update your copy of Firefox to the latest version, which is 2.0.0.4 to do so, when Firefox is open
under the Help menu, click on check for updates, follow the directions.

• Are you using a third party Firewall NetBarrier or other if so disable it.

• Check in Safari Preferences->Advanced tab, Proxies: check that none are not selected.

--------------------------------------------•

System preferences->Network->Show: (Ethernet or Airport whichever is the case )
TCP/IP-> DNS Servers: do you have # values entered there?

If nor see if your ISP Dns server numbers are listed here in the Portforwardweb page if you do not already use those, or get them from your ISP, you do not say which your IISP is.

In the TCP/IP tab, Configure IPv4: is it set to Using DHCP?
Configure IPv6 to Automatically,

Btw many users find that Verizon's dns numbers help, (Level3) - tnot restricted to Verizon customers
4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2

Whichever you decide to use your ISp's or the above verizon #s enter the Dns #s in list mode as shown, & and click on "Apply Now."

-------------------if as of yet nothing helps any------------•

Try Safari in a newly created test account test 10.4 & Adding a new user account to your computer
This helps to show if you have a system wide issue or if the problem is isolated to your username account.

If it behaves the same in the new created test account reapplying the OS x 10.4.10 Combined Update
from Apple downloads may help.

If you use Airport extreme or express see this on Airport interference issues as one of the posters said, cordless phone 2.5GHZ can cut you connection, as can see the link for more.

Hi everyone,

I bailed my Mac out on a 24 hour pass before we head out on vacation. The Mac Guys report that we need a new hard drive and that they got one Firmware error message but have not been able to re-construct that (get it again). I am noticing my memory is going down the toilet....I typically run around 30GB of available space and now am down to 18.2 having not even had my computer for days. It was down to 22GB before I brought it in. Any thoughts? They also reported that although I was running Disk Warrior, it wasn't doing the repairs it said it was. Sorry I'm not more technologically inclined.....I do my best. I'll bring it back in tomorrow for repair while we're on vacation....I am still having trouble using my browsers and there is that pesky memory depletion issue.....

Hi Karen

From your description, a trip to the repair shop sounds like a very good idea, especially because of the HD issues. Before you address Browser issues, it would be more helpful to get the Hard Drive situation addressed correctly. HD problems can lead to system and data failures.

I am noticing my memory is going down the toilet....I typically run around 30GB of available space and now am down to 18.2 having not even had my computer for days. It was down to 22GB before I brought it in. Any thoughts?

What you refer to as "memory" is really Hard Drive space.

If you visualize your computer like a piece of furniture, say a dresser, the drawers would represent where information is retained in the computer (hard drive). Attached to the dresser would be a separate compartment where information is temporarily held and processed. That would be the "memory" and Processor sections. Usually Memory size is around 512 mb to 2 plus GB. Back to the analogy, information is taken from the Hard Drive into Memory, where the speed is greater. After the process is done, back to one of the drawers it goes (hard drive storage).

A good way to determine what is using space in your computer is a nifty small application called What Size.

Thanks, Starman....I downloaded Whatsize and am finding that interesting. Getting rid of some junk but that doesn't explain the sudden loss of 12GB's. I'm catching up on email/finances etc before re-admitting this beast to the iHospital. It's all very stressfull. I'm not having good luck getting the most current version of Safari but perhaps now that is the least of my troubles. I appreciate everyone's input.....THANKS! I'll keep you all posted....karen

Hi Karen,

Thanks for the reply back & the new info. I am glad you took the mac in
and will be taking it back to be replaced.

My HD need to be replaced, on my Flat panel G4, when it was only 21 months old, Hard drives can & do go at anytime, it sure sounds as if yours is in need.

More likely then not there are many logs being written & unless you have been cleaning those files the space on your HD can get gobbled up,

See this link on Hard drive (Storage space) vs, Memory (Ram)

Using the Activity Monitor:

Good luck & please post back when you know more.

Have a nice vacation!

Final update: got a new hard drive but still had troubles -- which points to the server. I was in need of a new drive as I was low on memory to the point of flakyness. I had a long discussion with our local server and FINALLY got someone that knew something about Macs. He said that the latest update to OS X was creating these issues for all Mac users using our local server. He gave me a "wrok-around" for the time being....some DNS numbers that cleared up eeverything! Very stressful being w/out a computer.....between the computer going out and the dryer going out on the same day, I was feeling very Amish. Thanks all for your assistance....(and if you want to help me solve a couple more problems (which are ignorance related on my part)...search my other two posts. Have a good one! Karen
