iTunes 7.3 can't save library (Unknown error -50)

I upgraded to version 7.3 this morning and now the program cannot save changes to my library. The program reports unknown error -50 every time iTunes tries to save the ITL and XML files to My Music\iTunes.

I can confirm this works fine too. I was doubtful it would because I reason I'd upgraded from 7.2 to 7.3 was to try and get rid of the 'Visual++ error' on startup, however, touch wood, this hasn't reappeared.

Obviously you need to go to Add or Remove Programs (in Control Panel) and uninstall 7.3 before you reinstall 7.2.

I did it. Downgrading to 7.2 takes about 10 minutes,
including the download from filehippo.com and the
problem is solved. I don’t really miss the new
features like the blue highlighting, although the
»Sync« button was a good idea.
Goodbye 7.3

Did you have any podcast subscriptions &/or podcast downloads?
If yes, how were they affected?

I have (literally) several thousand podcast files, and they are all absolutely fine (including preservation of play counts etc.) Obviously no harm in backing up your library files (the binary and the XML) beforehand though.

Here's the info that Apple provides with the new 7.3.1 iTunes & Quicktime release:
-------------------------
With iTunes 7.3, you can now activate iPhone service and sync it with your music, TV shows, movies and more. Also, you can now wirelessly share and enjoy your favorite digital photos from any computer in your home with Apple TV. i Tunes 7.3.1 addresses a minor problem with iTunes 7.3 accessing the iTunes Library.
-------------------------

Minor problems?? Are they kidding??
Thank G-d it's fixed (we hope).

Just got a new error message after running error free with the new updated software - v. 7.3.1.3 - for over a week error free.

The new error is:

The iTunes Library Can Not Be Saved. An unkown error occured (-81).

What the heck is this??
I hope it doesn't happen again.

I'm going to start a new thread:
iTunes 7.3.1.3 The iTunes Library Can Not Be Saved. An unkown error occured (-81).

Guess I should have put this in this thread, instead of a seperate one:

I've had 7.3 running fine, but the 7.3.1.3 just screwed up my library. Songs are missing in the artist section (artist is still there, but not displaying any songs) and the song selection is missing them. They are present in the Album section though, which really makes me scratch my head.

I have a feeling that the new sorting for the iPhone is screwing everything up and not accepting old libraries.

Guess I'll be trying to put 7.2 back on, but not sure if the libraries are backwards compatible, as I had already been working with 7.3 for awhile now.

Why does Apple rush to put this out for the iPhone anyways? Its not like they designed the phone overnight.....

You may need to rebuild your iTunes library.

If you launch iTunes, go to the HELP menu and select iTunes Help. Once the iTunes Help service comes up type 'rebuild library'.

In the results of your search you will see that it's divided into two sections - HELP TOPICS and SUPPORT ARTICLES. Focus on the support Articles and you will find an article titled, 'How to re-create your iTunes Library'

NOTE: The article is OSX/XP & Vista centric.

ADVICE: It's a short article and will take you no more than 2 minutes to read. Read it in it's entirety beforehand in order to get a good understanding of what your steps will be.

Report back with any successes/failures or questions.

Hope this helps
