Floola or Sharepod. Both do simple transfers, Floola also does podcasts.

OK. I've got too many files & podcasts to mess around with this as a pioneer (pioneers end up with arrows in their backs). Anyone tried Floola yet and could give some feedback??
Maybe this could be another work around!?

My itunes popped up the -50 message and would then freeze up untill I "forced quit". I deleted 7.3, loaded 7.2 from OLD APPS, insalled. I'm back up and running as per before the 7.3 install.

WHY DID I HAVE TO GO ON A TREASURE HUNT TO FIND A WORK AROUND??????

Looks like this problem got solved somehow on Apple's side without the need to download an update manually. I read this in another thread - and when I just started iTunes 7.3 tonight it worked for the first time in days without giving a -50 error. My congratulations to the programmers who fixed this - I suspect it was quite a bear to solve.

Can you clarify this posting please. AIUI, there has not yet been an update to the 7.3 version of iTunes, so Apple cannot have changed the program to get rid of this error. Further, AIUI there are a number of work arounds that allow the error to be avoided, but as yet there has been no solution from Apple, nor acknowledgement of this error existing and being worked upon. I have this problem, although I do not have any podcasts. In my case, I suspect that the library error has arisen because I have used the "sort artist" field to order the entries in iTunes, and i have a large library - an almost full 60gb 5th gen.

Does anyone have any positive responses from Apple wrt this problem ?

I have the same problem, very frustrating!
I spoke to the Apple store and they said they were not aware of any problems, maybe they should check the forums more often.

    Here's what I know.

    1. My 7.3 install of iTunes gave me the error discussed here immediately after installation.

    2. I did no attempts at workarounds or changes to my 7.3 install.

    3. I saw the text below in a post last night on another Apple Forum thread on this same problem:......

    <Begin Quoted Text>
A friend works for Apple and says that they are aware of this problem.

Good. Thanks for letting us know.

A few hours ago I discovered that Apple has mysteriously fixed this problem from their end without my having to do anything on my end. I simply launched iTunes 7.3 and the updated library was written to disk -- hurray! Bizarre.
    <End Quoted Text>

    4. Immediately after reading I tried iTunes again and the error was gone.

    5. Does anybody actually read the legalese in the license agreement when they install software? It may well explain that Apple can modify / fix the installed software remotely. Or perhaps the problem was in some data source at Apple that iTunes accesses at startup.

In any case I did nothing to fix it and my 7.3 works fine now.

It could be they are still working on a fix for some operating systems - or other operating systems may need a different fix.

I have read a few other forums about this problem and one suggested deleating all podcasts.
I tried this and it seams to have worked.
It's not ideal but I only had a few and have managed to re-install them without the problem occuring again.

the apple store didn't help. i decided to delete all my podcasts and that fixed it right up. seems to be the best solution

As the problem is still around, I can’t understand why Apple isn’t issuing an upgraded version of iTunes or at least an apology. It’s really nervewrecking to have iTunes download the same podcasts over and over again and not updating them on the iPod »because the iTunes Library file cannot be saved«.
I don’t want to go through deleting and resubscribing all podcasts; nor would I want to lose any information contained in the library; so I guess downgrading to 7.2 is my way. Or do I have to expect any problems at all doing that?

Okay, what the crap?!? I had the error -50, did the whole deleting of my podcasts, that got rid of the error. Restarted, and now iTunes 7.3 cannot see my AppleTV. I have done all the steps on Apples site to try and get this to work, any ideas???

Don't know about you, but I'm STILL getting the error tonight (I'm on a Windows PC). - As of 7/10/07 at 10:40pm.

I Open iTunes, Window opens saying "Updating iTunes library" - and then I get the whole (-50) message AGAIN.

Not only that the problem is even worse now!
When I try to access another window outside of iTunes, the (-50) message ALWAYS IMMEDIATELY pops up, and when I click to close it, it now brings me back to iTunes.

In other words, when iTunes is working I can not work in ANY other program!!!

This is definitely NOT a fix for me!

You have to tick "Don't warn me again"... then iTunes will at least remain useable, if not fixed.
  • ma84jo Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)
I did it. Downgrading to 7.2 takes about 10 minutes, including the download from filehippo.com and the problem is solved. I don’t really miss the new features like the blue highlighting, although the »Sync« button was a good idea.
    Goodbye 7.3

...In my case, I suspect that the
library error has arisen because I have used the
"sort artist" field to order the entries in iTunes...

Out of curiousity, does iTunes 7.3 honor the sort fields you changed? In my case, it was not honoring them even though they were still there in the Sorting tab of "Get Info" ... UNTIL I actually viewed the "Get Info" and clicked either OK or next. Then the sort fields were honored for that song. I don't know how long it would take for you, but I viewed "Get Info" and clicked Next through my whole library (only 786 songs, though) and then it would save the library.

I think my problem is the same as yours; I do have a few video podcasts but they were definitely NOT the problem for me; the sorting was.
