I updated my G4 Powerbook (Al) with no issues. Then I updated my G5 and got the -50 message. The only difference between the two installations is that my iPods sync with my G5 and not my G4. Don't know if that's meaningful or not.

Interesting. I sync a 40 GB iPod 4G and iPod shuffle to my library. Maybe it is an iPod sync issue. If that is the case, this would be a huge issue with iPhone compatibility. I thought at first it might be related to referencing files on an external drive but that appears to be false.

Hi, I had this problem when I first upgraded (On a mac here but it should be the same), but I think I found a fix... at least it worked for me. I had created a few custom Sort Fields (I put Robert Pollard under Guided By Voices, Jeff Mangum under Neutral Milk Hotel, etc), and I noticed that after the upgrade (and shortly after the crazy error -50 message) that Jeff Mangum was showing up in the Browse list, but the tracks were missing. I knew that I had applied sorting to that artist, so I downgraded to 7.2 (if you don't know how to do this, just create an archive/backup of the iTunes app, delete, then install the older version that someone linked to on this page), then went through all the songs I'd customised via the Sort Fields (I recommend showing the Sort Artist column, then just ignore any in grey... iTunes made those from "The" bands), and removed the info in the sort field (I've only used Sort Artist, but if you've used others, get that info as well). Then I closed down 7.2, backed it up (just in case) and re-installed 7.3. Works fine now.

(Worth noting that I have my library on an external drive as well... though I have no idea if that played any role)

"I'd customised via the Sort Fields"

I can confirm that my library has custom sort fields as well.

I just upgraded my MBP C2D to 7.3 with no problems so far, the library upgrade finished fine and I just successfully added two new podcasts. I sync my 5G iPod with that iTunes.

I'll try upgrading iTunes on my G4 PB and see how that goes...

My library also has sort fields... I used them as a work-around for the massive sorting bugs introduced by Apple with their half-assed Portuguese localization (see this post: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4765415#4765415 ).

So maybe this is yet another sorting-related bug? Or does it have anything to do with having your music on an external HD (a config. which I, too, have)?... Questions, questions...

You are right about that! I can't believe that iTunes 7.3 is what is gonna cause so much s**t to go down the pipe for Apple and the iPhone.

Maybe, maybe not. Some users are able to upgrade without a problem, which is a good sign. If it is an issue related to custom sorting, it won't be a big deal because most iTunes users don't even know about the feature, let alone use it.

Well, it could be an interesting night:

Apple’s iPhone launch - a disaster in the making?
    http://www.tomrafteryit.net/apples-iphone-launch-a-disaster-in-the-making/

"First off the phone is sold brick-locked - in other words the iPhone is dead when you get it. You have to bring it home, hook it up to an Internet connected computer , and activate it online.

Remember, there are 1m of these puppies pre-sold. What happens when 1m people all try to log in to the site to activate their phones around the same time. How well will the activation server infrastructure hold up?

Presumably, if you have a PC, this process also involves the installation of iTunes and Safari (Macs come with these installed)."

Sigh, the iPhone won't even work until it is hooked up to iTunes. I'm hoping this -50 problem is not as big an issue as I think it might be...

I just upgraded my G4 PB with no problems whatsoever. I'm two for two with 7.3.

It's starting to look like it's installations using custom sort fields that have the problem, I don't use them on either of my iTunes installations.

Now, if only I didn't have to wait at least another six months for the iPhone to be released here...

I got around these issues by deleting iTunes, going to the Apple site and downloading the full 7.3 installer.

    Maybe just me, but hth

Does anyone have a link to the Windows version of 7.2?

Cleverly, Apple names the install file 'iTunesSetup' without adding the version number so when saved to my local drive, it replaced the previous version.

    Thanks.

Just adding to the list in the hopes that Apple notices this and fixes it. My wife is in line for my iPhone since I've been at work all day. Did the update this morning and got the -50 error. Posting this from my daughter's Macbook.

My machine is a MBP C2D and was not using any custom sort fields.
