    If I were in your shoes, I would power it down and remove it from the dock, get a cup of coffee and then turn on the iPhone and put it in the dock. I bet there are a number of different issues but some of the activations seem to be solved by power cycling the iPhone.

    8:41 AM I finally got a welcome email from ATT but my phone is still not active. Tried to log into the ATT account by you need a password that is supposed to be sent to you phone by text message.

    What is supposed to happen once you get the email?

    I got the same email and called the number, but they told me to call another number....When I called the new number that number for customer support is closed till monday. So now I am calling the 877 number and I am on hold again..... Nothing like AT&T and Apple ruining my day with my kids...

    Thanks Steve, I hope all the money you made on this phone has made you happy. Cause I'm not happy. I can't even play with the phone till its activated. If I could at least use the ipod fuction I would be ok right now, but I I get to do is look at the earth and call 911.

    I just want to add to this topic, so Apple knows that this is indeed a problem. I'm hoping this isn't the kind of future service we can expect from " The New ATT".

    I've been waiting since 10pm CDT last night and nothing. It really does suck when you see all the ads demonstrating the simplicity of the device only to be hampered by the difficulty to get it to even turn on for the first time.

    Anyway, just wanted to add to this post as another annoyed customer who payed an activation fee and still no activation. Hopefully, Apple tightens the reins on the service and response for those that bought the shiny new iPhone.

    I began activating my phone last night at about 7:30 p.m. Just a simple transfer an at&t number from one phone to my iphone. Called the iphone help line at about 10 becuase my phone still wasn't activated. The guy said it should take an hour. So i got a case number for my claim and he said if not activated call back in an hour. So an hour went buy and it was too late to call back by then. So i figured i'd go to sleep and by morning it would be activated...Nope. Still No Service.

    But to top the cake off, they deactivated my old phone as soon as i started activating my iphone. So i've been phoneless since 7:30 PM last night. Hope nobody needs to get ahold of me.

    Anybody else's activation taking more then 12 hours to activate?

    started my setup/activation last night around 10PM EST. ran into the super long activation screen for a while. eventually it failed and had me re-try, at which point i got an email saying it worked, and would take 24 hours.

    i went to bed, woke up and had an email saying activation was complete and i could use my phone.

    right now i'm waiting for my old # to finish porting over, i am guessing that is what takes 24 hours.

    overall it wasn't quite as quick as i had thought (or how quick apple had us thinking it would be), but my experience wasn't that bad. sounds like others are having far more serious issues though, so i think i lucked out a bit.

    hopefully this all gets sorted out quickly. sounds like att didn't quite anticipate the load..

    Try powering your phone off then on if you are having trouble with activation. A few reports show that this did the trick!

    I, too, purchased 2, one that's working & another still in paperweight mode.
    As you said ... the working one: WOW
    The sitting, doing nothing for 12 hours one: ANGER

    I am an Apple addict, but I HATE AT&T. We had a terrible experience with them while vacationing in Europe (family emergency & they wouldn't connect) a few years ago. Upon return, we switched ALL of our lines to BellSouth/Cingular. When AT&T purchased, hubby was ready to switch out, but I wanted made him stay for iPhone. He's been giving me that 'told you so' face for 12 hours now!

    Someone in a previous post wrote "All I have is a paperweight that calls 911." How true. I have been trying to activate for 12 hours now. I'm done. I am taking this brick piece of sh*t back to AT&T. They can take it back or make it work. I don't care which. Oh, and this restocking fee of 10%. Well, let me see, the **** thing has yet to work. A small claims case is $10 and can be filed online. I'll do that out of sheer principal. (CA Superior court) I am not paying a restocking fee to return a paperweight.

    OH, and to all of those who suggest power cycling the phone, I do that every other time I remove it from the dock to attempt syncing it again.

    Got two 8Gs last night at 7 after 5 hours in line. Started the activation process at about 11:45pm last night. The "3 minute" activation process timed out and said it would take additional time, so I was mad, but just made sure that all my music and pictures and contacts are organized on my Macbook Pro so that when I do get activated I'll be ready to sync. Apparently I got this shortly after I went to bed. AT&T is now processing your activation [######] - MaxWaitExceeded. MaxWaitExceeded? No **... Not entirely sure what that means. But I am now phoneless, because the SIM card on my Blackbery Pearl has been deactivated. So I am still waiting, have had no updates other than that e-mail, and I am away from home and my parents are out looking at houses which means I'm left sitting here becuase I have no way of getting in touch with anybody...

    Edit: I am an existing ATT customer transferring my number over, and have been a customer for 6 years now going through the Cingular/ATT switches and all.

    14 hours here. My Verizon phone no longer works, and no activation email from AT&T yet. I'm on hold on my land line now trying to get a rep from AT&T on the phone (been waiting 55 minutes so far)!
