Hey Timothy Stansbury,
The iPhone is designed to sync from a playlist. This article will give more information.
The playlists are very flexible and customizable in iTunes, this article gives more informaiton. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesMac/7.0/en/513.html
imho, the lack of manual music and video management
is a mistake. i've had 4 ipods over the years and have always used
manual mode. the playlist hack works okay
and is only mildly cumbersome.
however i tend to buy music from itunes both on my
imac at home and my pc at work. i've always simply
been to plug in my ipod to either computer and grab my
purchases, in either location. now, my iphone is "locked"
to my imac. i'm sure apple had a good reason to leave out
manual management, but i would suggest revisiting this
According to the link you pointed to, "Set sync options. You can sync all items, selected items or playlists, or a number of recent, unwatched, or unplayed items. In the Music tab, you can elect to also sync music videos. If you sync music, audiobooks are synced too.", wouldn't "selected items" mean manual syncing.
