Hearing Aid Compatibility

Here's a question no one has been able to answer for me. Is the iphone rated for hearing aid compatibility -- usually a small M5/T5 designation somewhere on the packaging. If anyone from Apple is monitoring this forum it would really help those of us who need this compatibility.

Hi Folks,

I wear Sonic Innovations digital hearing aids. I also do pro audio recording and know the ins-and-outs of telecoil technology.

1. The iPhone software presently does not have a hearing aid setting that outputs a clear EM signal to work with aids that have telecoils
2. My aids do not work well on telecoil setting with the iPhone. There is interference from the phone.
3. However, the iPhone volume is so good that if you goose it up to the top you have no problem listening through the microphone of your aid by just holding the receiver of the phone up to the microphone. I find I get better results with this if I use an omnidirectional setting on my aids rather than directional.
4. The iPhone works fine with my bluetooth headset (SoundID) which is programmed to match with my hearing aid prescription. That is how I will normally use the phone.

So. it would be nice if Apple would give us a telecoil setting in a future version of the phone, but this one doesn't have it. However, the native volume of the phone is good enough that you can just hold it up to your hearing aid microphone and it will probably work fine. Assisted living bluetooth headsets also appear to work fine.

Glad to help,
Scot Giles

There's no hearing aid rating on the packaging, and the User's Manual, on page 107, says:

"Hearing AidsiPhone may interfere with some hearing aids. If it does, consult the hearing aid manufacturer or your physician for alternatives or remedies."

The demo phone I made a test call on was fine with my America Hears Freedom AD ITE aids.

I finally found the information for anyone who has hearing aids like me.

http://images.apple.com/accessibility/pdf/iphone_vpat.pdf

is the accessibility template document for the iphone. As for hearing aids:

iphone is not rated M3 or T3 as defined by the United States Federal Communications Commission hearing aid compatibility guidelines. testing is in progress.
