Can't transfer phone number!!!

I'm currently a sprint customer and I'm trying to transfer my number to AT&T in the initial stage of setting up my iphone and I get the message:

"the phone number you entered cannot be transfered. You must uncheck the transfer number option and clear the information in the text fields to continue"

I've done it 20 times now and checked my account number etc. more than a few times....

Whats up?

Same problem. After 2 hours of being on hold and some extremely helpful CSR's we came up with this work around.
1) Sign up with new customer need new number
2) Go through entire activation write down your new number
3) Call AT&T Porting department at 888-898-7685 (I think however they closed at 12:00am EST)
4) Tell them you need to port your Sprint Number to the new number you just received and make that number go away.
5) The iPhone Rocks. Enjoy!
Took me a total of 5 minutes once I found out what to do. I am done and ported. (THANK GOD!)

AT&T will say you cannot transfer your phone number if your old phone number is in a different service area than your current location/billing address. HOWEVER, there is a workaround.

On the first screen of the activation step, you'll need to enter your old billing zip (i.e. a zip code that matches the area code of your current phone number). Later in the process you'll be able to enter your correct billing address.
