WEP-Open, DHCP, 2Wire -- refuses to play ball

Hi all,

I have a 2wire wireless router. It's configured for WEP-Open security with a 13 character password. DHCP is turned on. There is no MAC filtering on the router.

My iPhone asks me for the password. Sometimes it says "cannot connect" sometimes it connects ok.

When it connects, it doesn't acquire a DHCP lease. I select "Renew Lease" - nothing.

I've tried configuring static IP data to no avail - it doesn't appear to touch my router (I've checked syslog at debug level).

Anyone got any ideas as to how I can remedy this?

Thanks

I have also been having the same issue with my 2wire wireless router / dsl modem.

I have been following all the support threads about this issue, and I kept trying and trying and trying different things, and here is what finally worked for me with the 2wire.

2wire base station is set to WEP Open for the WEP setting.

With the iPhone, I clicked on the network and picked FORGET NETWORK.

Then I logged back in.

When it asked for the password, I clicked on the setting where it says ASCI/hex instead of password.

Then I entered the default password printed on the bottom of the modem, with a $ in front of it.

So I entered: $6135675446 as an example, although that isn't my actual password and it won't be your actual password.

You have to look on the bottom of your modem to see what your password will be.

I tried all of the different things that everyone has been suggesting with WEP problems, and this is what ended up working with my 2WIRE.

Also, I did turn the phone on and off several times between attempts. And I turned on Airport Mode to turn off the radio several times.

But now it is working like a charm, so it does work with 2wire. It's just a matter of trying out all those different things people are suggesting until you hit the one that magically works with your WEP router or settings.

Good luck!

This procedure gets me "sorta" connected! That is, it now seems to recognize the wireless modem and I get the checkmark next to the network name. BUT - like the initial user (in this thread) I can't get it to assign a IP address. I get no WIFI signal strength indication on the top of the home page - still only the EDGE indicator. Yes - it seems to be connected to the wireless router; but it's not connecting to the internet via the 802.11 network. I know this might sound confusing. Sigh. Larsomatic: when you open settings, do you see a DHCP address there? Do you see the ))) type WIFI Signal indicator on the top of your home page? THanks for replying. Mike

I had the exact same issue. The iphone (and airport express btw) do not notify you if the WEP key entered is not accepted... thus, you have no idea if it is actually setup correctly - until you actually are using it without Edge at the top of the screen. I only had to change from the default password entry to the hex and enter the WEP key there (the long string of digits on the bottom of the 2wire). I did not use a "$". Worked like a charm.

Update: by turning the phone off, totally off, and then back on, indeed the ))) WIFI Signal indicator replaces the EDGE indicator on the home page. BUT when I try to access any web page, including Apple's own home page, I get the following error message: "Safari can't open the page because it can't find the server." ****! Any other suggestions guys?

Lots of people have been posting with issues of not being able to connect to wifi networks with WEP security. I too, have a 2wire wireless modem, and have been having the same issues you guys have. I tried the different procedures suggested by others, but to no avail. It would show me that I was connected to my home network, but the 2wire wouldn't assign me a proper IP address. Unfortunately, the only thing that fixed it was turning off WEP security on the 2wire. Once I did that, the 2wire assigned me a proper IP and I was able to use my wifi connection. Luckily in my neighborhood, I don't have to worry too much about my wireless security, but I can see this definitely being a problem for others. Sounds like this is something Apple needs to tackle in a software update soon! And it doesn't sound like it's just a 2wire-centered problem...

It's been awhile since I updated this thread ... only because I was FINALLY able to get things working and have been consumed with USING the iPhone.

In summary, all I had to do was use the HEX/ASCII option for entering the encryption password (the $ followed by ten digits) ... AND THEN "reset" the modem - by simply turning it off, wait 20 sec, and then back on - and voila!

Once it' "joined" my network propertly this first time, from then on it has immediately joined the network without incident and without needing to re-input the password or reset the modem.

hope everyone else is "up and running" ... and discovering all the other little gotcha's in this new device. Just remember: being an "early adopter" has it's downside! So remain patient; and keep the big picture in mind about what Apple has done here: they've changed the landscape of mobile communications forever!

take care ....
