Can the Battery be Overcharged?

I know that iPod batteries cannot be overcharged. I assume that the same is true for iPhone. Am I right or should I be careful how long I leave it plugged in?

2 17" iMac Intel Duos networked 1GB each, Airport Express, everything up-to-date, Mac OS X (10.4.9), 5 iPods in family (1st shuffle, 1st and 2nd mini, 2 1st nanos) - have Cingular!

I doubt it, since it charges automatically when its connected to your computer via USB... everyones would be overcharged if so.

Leaving the iPhone plugged into a USB adapter is probably the best bet. I'm assuming iPhones have the same technology as iPods in which there is a designated chip there to control charging and preventing the battery from being damaged if left in too long. Leaving your iPhone in a sleeping computer will drain the battery just as it would if it wasn't connected at all since there is no power going in.
