Can't send mail via wireless

I have no problems sending email via a hard wired (ethernet) connection. When I am on a wireless network I cannot send any emails. I am using OSX 10.4.10 and apple mail. I have called my service provider, charter, and they were no help at all. I have tried adding my username and password to the outgoing smtp settings, creating a new account, changing the port from 25 to several others, etc. Email always receives just fine, but via any wireless network they will not send.

I also have this problem with Mail. When i use dail up with Netzero on my G4 laptop, messages send out with Mail fine, no problem. But at any wireless place i go to with this laptop i cannot send with Mail (there is never a problem with receiving mail into the inbox). Here is an interesting note though - there was one wireless cafe where i had to pay for the online time, and at this place i could send messages with Mail. Whenever I'm at a free wireless place and cannot send something with Mail I always get a message that says "Error - This message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered. The server smtp.netzero.com cannot be contacted on port 25."

If sending with Mail always works while using dail up then that should mean that all settings for incoming and outgoing servers are fine and dandy, right?

Hi advenmus: This isn't an isolated issue or for that matter a "Problem" with your computer. It is quite common for internet providers to block email from being sent using a different smtp setting. In your case, the internet provider used at "some wireless place" is not allowing mail to be sent using the outgoing mail setting "smtp.netzero.com".

In the case of your paid online cafe, the Internet provider there is allowing mail to be sent form a different smtp setting.

The error occurs on any wireless network I am connected to. Any wireless network. I travel quite a bit around the USA and Asia, so the error most often occurs in hotels with wireless networks. Coworkers who use PCs do not seem to have the same trouble using the same wireless networks. I had the same trouble with my old G3 Lombard powerbook and never got it resolved.

The error message I get is:
Error - This message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered

I have tried both authenticated (with username and password) and without authentication.

Any ideas that may help?

thanks for the answer Stedman. I had a feeling outgoing messages were being purposely blocked in these wireless places, also in hotel wireless spots i've seen this too, and messages consistently won't go out (except for that one aforementioned cafe where i paid for the service). But i do not understand why they would want to block them in free wireless networks. Because i can still copy and paste the message into my web mail and send that way. And that process takes longer and makes me stay in the cafe longer and leech on their free connection longer. Maybe they think i will also buy more coffee.

But hold everything...this does not cover what Kevin says about his co-workers with PCs being able to send out with wireless. Is this true Kevin? Do you know what mail applications they use?
