Keypad tones

Under the phone icon there is an ability to use the keypad feature to manually dial a number. Here's my problem. I can use the phone to dial up to a phone number at work to check my work voicemail. When the call connects I am prompted to dial my extension and a password. Usually when I manually dial the phone, I hear keypad tones or key sounds. With the iPhone the key sound is not present. Can anyone tell me why this is or how to fix that?

TO ALL.... Please disregard this entire thread. I tried calling my office again this morning and it worked. I was almost sure that I was dialing it properly but didn't get a response. Oh well... Hope you all enjoy your new phones...I know I do..

ANyone know then how to get the DTMF tones to transmit properly to get into your work voicemail without using the keypad to enter the id and password? The tones are too long and don't seem adjustable.

When you are in a call, the keypad button can be pressed to display a keypad to use your touch tones. When a touch tone is pressed though, one doesn't hear anything. This is totally normal, and touch tones will work normally even though you can't hear them.

The reason for this is simple. GSM cell phones do not transmit DTMF tones as many people probably think. What actually happens is when you're on a call and press a number or # or *, a signal is sent to the cellular company's equipment indicating you've pressed that button. The tone is then generated in the cellular company's equipment, not on your cell phone. The tones some people hear on their GSM cell phones when they press a number or # or * don't really have a function other than making the person using the cell phone feel good, letting them know that they've pressed a button.

Okay then... all of that being understood and I have a firm grasp on "how" DTMF tones work... I don't believe that the iPhone sends out these tones. I have tried over and over to use the voicemail at the office and there is NO response by my using the keypad to initiate the voicemail sequence. Still need some help here.

When you hit the call button and it connects a six section grid appears. the second button, on the top, is the keypad button. Hit that and your all set to "press 1 for english"

I have exactly the same problem. If I dial manually, it works. If I use the speed dial, the tones are too long. Sigh...
